Socks, former First Cat of President Bill Clinton's administration, was euthanized on Friday morning, Feb. 20, according to the famous cat's longtime caretaker, Betty Currie of Hollywood.

Socks had been suffering from cancer of the jaw.

"I'm miserable, miserable, miserable," Currie said in a Friday afternoon telephone call.

Currie said she suspected that the cat's condition was deteriorating throughout the week. "He wouldn't eat for two days," she said. "This morning, when I got up, he didn't get up like he normally would."

Rest in peace, Socks...:(

Only fellow pet lovers can appreciate how sad she must be right now. I hope Betty has plenty of hugs from friends/family members and will look to her new "guardian angel" from time to time.

19. We love you Socks!
Socks was such a wonderful cat. When I was 12 years old, Hilary Clinton came to my floor at Children's Hospital. Later, his caretaker brought Socks up and I got to hold him. Socks was very good about it and he just hung on to me. Socks has lived a good long life. He will be remembered as a White House pet forever.:)

I loved that kitteh, he was an awesome change from those canines! It was so cool to have catitude in the WH ...

May he be free from pain, and enjoy romping in the grass, chasing all the things kittys love to chase, and all the fancy feast he could ever want...
and may he reunited with his human family in heaven when the time comes.

I figure he was around 17, that's ripe old age for a cat. And he got to live in the White House. He was almost as famous as Morris.
