My Two Cents on the Chimp cartoon
Edited on Fri Feb-20-09 08:14 PM by DearAbby
Now tell me if I am wrong, but a few short years ago, A singing group was black listed for saying things against the Bush Policies...and that was okay then....But today you can depict the President as a chimpanzee with two bullet holes and laying in a pool of blood...and call it free speech....SOMETHING STINKS TO HIGH HEAVEN HERE!

Spell checked and thank you

4. Did you know what the poster meant?
If so, don't worry about a mistyped word. If not, well, I'm not quite sure quite what to say to you except that you must some sort of elitist or something.

14. A good many of DU believe they are elitist whether they are honest enough to admit it or not.
My point is that this subject has been done to death with little original to say that even a misspelled word is original.

3. I think all they did was apologize for being from Texas, not even a direct
renunciation of Bush policies (although I could be wrong)

5. Why was the chimp meant to be the president?
"you can deplict the President as a chimpanzee..."

7. Ah, because I thought the caption referred to whoever wrote the stimulus bill...
Edited on Fri Feb-20-09 08:19 PM by Oregone
And Obama didn't write it. So it wasn't clear to me. At all.

I guess since, it wasn't referring to the president in your view, makes it okay. :sarcasm: I know it was Obama who wanted the Stimulus package. It is defined by the media as Obama's "Package"...dance around the wording, the violent act in that cartoon was offensive. PERIOD ..We all know what and who the cartoonist meant, so many of us would not be taking it this way.

11. "I guess since, it wasn't referring to the president in your view, makes it okay"
Yes it does make it 'ok'. I see no problem with using a crazy chimp as a symbol of Congress (both on a intellectual and sanity level).

"I know it was Obama who wanted the Stimulus package. It is defined by the media as Obama's "Package"...dance around the wording"

EVERYONE wanted the stimulus package. Its a necessity. It was his job, as it would be any president's job, to tout it. But write it, unfortunately (as it may not of sucked so hard), he did not. Regardless, you mention it is "clear" who is being referred to. I think that isn't clear whatsoever. If there is ever any room to "dance around the wording", it surely suggests that the issue does not have absolute clarity.

"We all know what and who the cartoonist meant, so many of us would not be taking it this way."

Knowledge is the word for recognizing 2+2=4. Knowledge refers to knowing that if you toss a ball up, gravity will bring it back down. There are scientific, measurable ways to arrive at these conclusions...on the contrary, you believe the president is what the cartoonist is referring to (even with a high degree of certainty, it is still belief). And further, what we have here is belief in that which cannot be proven--in other words, faith. In your heart, you have faith that he meant the worse, which drives this virtual crusade (and some people were driven by such outrage before knowing about Travis the chimp). I wish you well in that.

But to me, it was not clear, at all. I actually don't need a cartoonist to draw a picture for me to consider Congress a bunch of primates. So naturally, my mind arrived at a very different place when seeing this.

17. Violent recourse is the answer?
I am sorry for sounding passive aggressive. The Cartoon was offensive on many levels. And I personally took the dead Chimp in the Cartoon to represent President Obama. I am not alone in that assessment.

But it was wrong on so many levels, the violence of the cartoon...their way of dealing with a political topic...shoot the writer? Assassinate your opponent? Just exactly what did that Cartoon say to you?

Was the chimp representing Pelosi or Obama?

And shooting...says what?

He still didn't write it. I don't care what you want to prove with Yahoo next.

8. I remember a film maker
whose work was not allowed to be shown on national TV because of the subject matter, being against the Bush policies..called F-911. To this day, Michael Moore is ridiculed for his views, by the Right Wing.

16. That cartoon is like the guy who
stands close to you on a bus and "accidentally" brushes your breast with his arm. If you make an issue of it, he swears it was an accident and makes you look like a fool. If you don't make an issue of it, he does it again. And either way, you were molested.
