1. Nixon At Least Had A Plurality of voters
Richard Nixon at least had a plurality of voters (Republicans as well as conservative Democrats) who voted for him, so he could more plausibly pretend to have a 'Silent Majority' of support. The right-wing talking heads either can't deal with the truth or don't want to talk about it. The right wingie-dingies are a political minority in this country; McCain only got as many votes as he did because older Republicans still remembered the old McCain from the 2000 election.

The Republicans no longer have a viable national presidential candidate from either a moderate or a 'maverick' background. Barring a mid-ocean meteor strike that wipes out enough blue voters on either the Atlantic or Pacific coasts, the 2012 election bids fair to humble some more right wing Republicans.

2. Do you know what the original meaning of "silent majority" was?

I have a very old newspaper clipping, from the obituary section.

One of our ancestors had just joined the "Silent Majority."

Yes, he had died.
