BART holdup victim grabs knife, kills robber
A man being robbed by two Oakland men in the parking lot of the Fruitvale BART station managed to grab a knife from one of the assailants and stabbed the other one to death, authorities said today.

The robbery victim was approached by the two 18-year-old men about 9:30 p.m. Thursday. One of the men showed a knife and the other said he had a gun, BART spokesman Linton Johnson said.

Their target, a 23-year-old man who lives out of state, was robbed of some items before wrestling away the knife from one of the men and stabbing the other robber, Johnson said. He said the stabbing "appears to be a self-defense move."

The two assailants ran, and the robbery victim, whose name was not released, called Oakland police.

-----

The incident happened less than three hours after a triple shooting outside the Daly City BART station left one man dead.

2. damn!
that was one gutsy move. I know that I wouldn't have the sense or strength to get a knife away from a guy.

And one big ol' HELL!! I've got to start taking BART next month. I'd better get some pepper spray.

3. Sense? Unless they were threatening to kill him, that was a bonehead move par excellence . . .
999 times out of a thousand, that would get you dead or injured. How much is property worth, versus your life or your health?

On another topic, BART's been in the news waaaay too much of late. Time to think of taking the bus instead.

14. well, I meant
that in that situation I would probably panic and not be thinking quickly enough to do something like that. But yes, you're right. Some money and plastic aren't worth anyone's life.

16. There we agree. I've never been threatened close up like that . . .
So I can't predict what I might do. I'm pretty sure that attacking armed muggers isn't one of things on the likely list.

4. That's the same station where Oscar Grant was brutally murdered by that cop!

And guess whose station it used to be, back in the mid-80s? :scared:

edit: The Fruitvale BART station was the scene of the fatal New Year's Day shooting of unarmed passenger Oscar Grant, 22, by BART police Officer Johannes Mehserle. Mehserle, who resigned from the force, has pleaded not guilty to a murder charge and is free on $3 million bail.

6. Ok, that took more guts and skill than I've ever had.
I've seen people (while in training) who could take a knife in a couple of moves.....

Pretty awesome when it works, when it fails you get to wrestle a guy with a knife. Not where you want to be.

7. Six posts in, and a version of "guts" has appeared twice
Am I the only one who thinks the combination of "knife" and "guts" is some icky-making reading? :)

8. Which is it?
The two ran away or he stabbed one of them to death?

This story, as posted, makes no sense.

10. okay, the two robbers ran away and the one who was stabbed left a trail of blood
right up until he collapsed into a heap and died.

But you are right, the story as written makes no sense.

12. That was my first question as well.
It would be hard to run away after being fatally stabbed.

17. I got jumped by three guys in a bar in the U.P.
Sent two of them to the hospital - I cut them up pretty bad with a broken drink glass. Wasn't a question of being brave, was more being pissed off and determined to get at least a couple licks in before I got my ass kicked. Surprised them so much they ran away. I guess with 3 against 1, they weren't expecting a fight...
