Not that I am upset....but what happened to Randi this time?? |
|
We were down in Mexico last week working in Tijuana...we come home and Nova M has changed names and Randi is gone again. I am not a great fan of hers, only because I think her head is too large to fit through most doors, but she is very smart and informed. I don't like her style, but she gets it right when she talks about the issues, so I am wondering; what did she do and is there any hope of her reappearing elsewhere?
Here is what it says on her website:
TO ALL:
NOVA M RADIO HAS NOT YET CORRECTED THE PROBLEM THAT HAS KEPT ME OFF THE AIR DESPITE MY STRONG DESIRE AND READINESS TO BROADCAST MY SHOW. RESPECTING THE EMPLOYER-EMPLOYEE RELATIONSHIP THAT HAS EXISTED BETWEEN NOVA M AND ME, AND EXPECTING THE SOLUTION TO BE QUICKLY ACHIEVED, DETAILS OF THE TRIGGERING EVENT WERE WITHHELD IN GOOD FAITH. BUT I CAN TELL YOU THIS MUCH: ANY STATEMENT IMPLICATING ME AS BEING IN ANY WAY RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DISRUPTION IN THE RANDI RHODES SHOW IS PATENTLY FALSE. THIS ENTIRE SITUATION IS SOLELY WITHIN THE CONTROL OF NOVA M.
IN LIGHT OF MOST RECENT DEVELOPMENTS, MY SHOW WILL BE SEEKING A NEW HOME. I WOULD ASK FOR YOUR CONTINUED PATIENCE AND INDULGENCE IN RESPECTING MY RIGHTS DURING THIS TIME. YOUR UNWAVERING SUPPORT IS CHERISHED. THANK YOU.
RANDI RHODES

Randi didn't do anything wrong. Her contract was in breach and terminated.

I should have known, progressive talk cannot get support no matter what...guess the ship of state will have to go under the waves before sponsors will wake up, but by then it will be too late. Thanks.

9. That's actually not true at all |
|
Ed Schultz, Stephanie Miller, Bill Press and now Thom Hartman are all progressive talkers and all are successful, profitable radio talk shows. Sponsors DO sponsor shows with ratings.
The problem with starting a radio network is that it is very difficult. One must have huge financing to pay the hosts, producers, engineers, and hardware costs of running a network. Nova M was quite a small comapny and maybe bit off more than they could chew regarding taking on Randi Rhodes. (I mean that from a financial standpoint.)
Couple that with very bad timing with radio (and all advertising) revenues tanking in this recession.

4. I'd say that remains to be seen... |
|
The full story is clearly not out, but something occurred that stressed NovaM (and Sheldon Drobney quite literally and personally) to the breaking point. I don't know what happened, but I'd say it is rather premature to conclude that "Randi didn't do anything 'wrong'"
Frankly, I'm just sorry, all the way around. This kind of thing is devastating to the future of progressive radio.

5. Apparently she writes the very same way that she speaks |

TOO FORCEFULLY FOR MY COMFORT.
It's one thing to get your audience worked up about something but it's entirely something else to be a constant agitation. Even washing machines change rhythm once in a while.

6. Blame it on the Bush Depression. |

Looks like Nova-M ran out of money, and couldn't pay their bills. Apparently, they couldn't make payroll, so a bunch of staff lost their jobs, and they couldn't pay their liability insurance, especially libel insurance that Randi needs so she can broadcast without every little asshole with a law degree trying to sue her into oblivion.
Who's fault is it? Not Randi's. Not Nova-M's. It's a rough economy, everyone's struggling to pay the bills, and Nova-M just didn't make it. And who would expect Randi to work for free, especially if by working for free, she also became vulnerable to lawsuits?
