"little diddy..bout Jack and Diane".. two American kids growin up..
Edited on Sat Feb-21-09 09:00 PM by lib2DaBone
On Feb 22, 1963 I fell in love with my first girl friend ...(Dianne)

I had to hitch-hike many miles in the winter-cold to see her.. but I didn't care. It was all good.

On that night, Feb 22nd, 1963, I stuck my thumb out to hitch a ride, and this young guy picked me up in a brand new Pontiac Bonneville. Wow, what a ride.

A major breakthrough in audio in 1963 was what they called "Reverb" on the radio. (it was an option on high end GM cars). Pontiac Bonneville and Buick Electrica 225's (in those days) were some cars to behold. All leather.. chrome and steel.. beautiful....

Back in 1963 we hitch-hiked everywhere.. there were no crimes or stigma attached. (At least no crimes I knew about).

Long story short, the driver took me the whole 20 miles on that winter night in the comfort of a brand new Pontiac Bonneville. But as a young person (15 years old) I'll never forgot the moment.. for some reason?)

On the radio was a song by the Dixie Cups, called "Going to the Chapel".

The smell of the leather seats and the reverb on the radio and that song... (as I thought about how happy I would be to see my girl friend)... it could have been 20 below zero and I diidn't care.. I just wanted to see her.

I Don't know what this has to do with anything (politics or the economy).... but it just felt like the right time to mention it.

Thanks to my girlfriend Dianne Klembarski... and thanks to General Motors in 1963.

1. Nice story
It may not have anything to do with anything but it evokes some good memories for me too. Thanks for sharing it.

2. Great story, and those were the days when Am. cars were GREAT!
I remember going to a car show every year...JUST TO SEE THE NEW MODELS! It was the oddball to see a foreign car at any of those shows. I remembr seing a VW Beetle, and there were only 2 respoinses. People either loved it because of it's simplicity, and thought it was cute, or they thought it was the ugliest thing they'd ever seen and would NEVER drive one!

I'm a little older than you, and I remember the birth of the FINS, and the more chrome the better!

Maybe it's just my old age, but I really believe if GM, Ford & Chrysler would build cars people could get excited about again, their problems would be cured! I'm personally sick of every damn car looking almost the same, and NONE have any pizzazz anymore!

4. I too wax nostalgic for the '70s Pontiacs I've known...
Red w/white interiors...slippery bench seats all the way across... a LeMans that showed me New England on a fine October morn, a Lux as at home on a hot summer eve or the coldest, deepest blizzard, a Catalina, so I could at least get the kids to the doctor, and a Bonneville, who knew that foggy windows preceded kids, LOL...here's to muscle, power, and fine cars.

5. Damn...what a rush of memories;
as a young sailor, I hitch hiked many a mile in the late 60's, and never had a problem. Met some great people along the way. A peacoat was a sailors best friend, the warmest coat I ever owned. Old girlfriends, old cars, old memories, thanks for the blast from the past.....:toast:
