The Illuminati? Because they don't want anyone finding any left behind evidence that they were responsible for sinking the place?
Who the hell would cover up finding a three thousand year old archeological site? We're not living in a "National Treasure" movie.
I'm hoping that was sarcasm.

5. I believe they are now saying that these are lines from sonar |

tracking. That being said, it is interesting that Atlantis still piques the curiosity after these thousands of years. Don't some say it is really a story of an island (Santorini or something like that) near Crete that was blown apart by a volcano?

The "streets" are actually an artifact of the mapping process.

11. And, y'know, are several miles wide |
|
And appearing in several other places around the oceans.
Of course, anyone who still believes in the super-seekrit incredibly advanced continent civilization with no evidence beyond an allegorical mention in one(1) piece of ancient writing and half the wooier websites on the Internet probably has something of a fact shield about the whole thing by now.
People want to believe they've found Atlantis (or that "they" are concealing its existence - why?), so they'll just throw out anything that gets in the way of that like this.

12. Atlantis' streets weren't in grids. They were concentric circles. |
|
Artist's rendering based on Plato's writings. "There had been a powerful empire located to the west of the "Pillars of Hercules" (what we now call the Straight of Gibraltar) on an island in the Atlantic Ocean. The nation there had been established by Poseidon, the God of the Sea. Poseidon fathered five sets of twins on the island. The firstborn, Atlas, had the continent and the surrounding ocean named for him. Poseidon divided the land into ten sections, each to be ruled by a son, or his heirs.
The capital city of Atlantis was a marvel of architecture and engineering. The city was composed of a series of concentric walls and canals. At the very center was a hill, and on top of the hill a temple to Poseidon. Inside was a gold statue of the God of the Sea showing him driving six winged horses.
About 9000 years before the time of Plato, after the people of Atlantis became corrupt and greedy, the gods decided to destroy them. A violent earthquake shook the land, giant waves rolled over the shores, and the island sank into the sea, never to be seen again."
