Should the "History" Channel change it's name to the UFO Channel
All day long it's had shows about UFO's on. Oh, come to think of it earlier this morning they did have a program on the Loch Nest Monster.

If you can get it the History Channel International is light years better.

Actually I should have included Hitler under monsters since he caused more horror than Bigfoot or the Loch Nest Monster ever did.

23. Exactly.
As a homeschooling mom (independent study, actually, under the auspices of a credentialed teacher and charter school), I have the history channel to be useless. Frankly, we can rent great educational films through Netflix, and use the episodes on each subject on www.brainpop.com (in addition to Compass Odyssey).

I found a few good things on NatGeo and History International; but the useful episodes are few and far between.

Nova and Frontline have been wonderful.

SciFi, History, Discovery, TLC, even Style Channel and WE have been showing this stuff. While it can be amusing (who doesn't like a good ghost story every so often?) it's getting really old when so many different channels have the same crap all the time.

All the cable channels are going downhill and appealing only to the lowest common denominator. Discover Science Channel has been having some good shows, but it is not carried by as many companies - I think it is only on premium satellite deals.

24. In my humble opinion ...
the Powers that Be are trying to dumb us down .

One day, I was look at the "history channels," and all I saw was programs related to documenting the "historical accuracy" of the Bible.

Unbelievable.

I had to go to the BBC DVDs to get a comprehensive documentation of human evolution, and the evolution of the planet had to be found there also.

31. It is very frustrating.
Edited on Sun Feb-22-09 08:35 PM by Maat
In my case, it is particularly frustrating because it is difficult to find resources that clearly articulate evolution to a twelve-year-old.

The following have been highly valuable: BrainPop episodes, the BBC series of DVDs, and NOVA: Judgment Day: Intelligent Design on Trial.

I wonder quite a bit about our future; in our case, we are lucky: Hubby has a doctorate, and is a chemical and materials engineer. So, we are definitely emphasizing science, with virtually no help from the channels that we pay for.

We have Verizon FIOS, am out in SoCal, and have a plethora of PBS stattions.

We're lucky.

That special, Nova:Judgment Day: Intelligent Design on Trial was just the best. I ordered a copy. I can't stop raving about it. Dr. Miller nailed down scientific theory, evolution, transitional fossils, DNA, and testability. It was wonderful. It's two hours long, though, and you have to work through it.

P.S. I'm sorry about that 'typo' above. Dang, and I'm so strict with the kid about grammar, syntax and spelling!

56. Thanks - I'll check that out.
That's good to know.

To tell you the truth, I agree with Dr. Eugenie Scott, of the National Science Education Center (oh, I'll have to look up the exact name of her organization), that evolution has largely been taken out of textbooks. I had to research material and add it to what was in her textbooks. Dr. Scott stated that the textbook publishers had taken it out because they wanted to avoid the controversy altogether; it was sad watching her say that. I think that, soon, it will be up to parents to make sure that their kids get a complete education on the subject.

Take care!

57. Text books are the next battle ground.
Some states buy text books as a monolith and water it down to their most ignorant residents (take Texas for instance).

And some of these states are so huge that they can dictate which text books will get published.

Oh, btw, here is the link to Dr. Scott's organization: http://www.natcenscied.org/
