Plane Carrying Ind. Governor Makes Diverted Landing In Columbus
Plane Carrying Ind. Governor Makes Diverted Landing In Columbus
Sunday, February 22, 2009 2:53 PM

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The airplane carrying Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels landed unexpectedly at Port Columbus International Airport on Sunday morning after the plane's windshield cracked midflight.

Daniels was flying to Washington D.C. to take part in the National Governor's Association meeting when the incident occurred.

According to Rick Barnett with the Indiana State Police, the plane was flying at 23,000 feet when both of the aircraft's windshields cracked, 10TV's Glenn McEntyre reported.

Rather than continuing on to Washington D.C. a decision was made to make a diverted landing at Port Columbus. No emergency declaration was made and Daniels was not in danger, Barnett said.

Barnett, who oversees all Indiana state aircraft, said windshields do crack from time to time, and added that in some cases the windshield's heat controller is to blame, McEntyre reported.

2. Windshields "crack from time to time"?
Somehow I don't fimd that cavalier comment too comforting. Imagine if you were at the point of no return flying over the Pacific.

3. Airplane windows are made of several layers.
If one layer cracks it doesn't mean the window shatters or falls out. It's not nearly as bad as it sounds.
