Two New York Dailies Drop Sunday, Monday editions

NEW YORK - Two upstate New York newspapers will cut back production from seven to five days per week, with a joint weekend edition planned for Saturdays.

The two papers -- The Daily Mail of Catskill, N.Y., and the Register-Star of Hudson, N.Y. -- announced Thursday plans to go to a Tuesday-through-Saturday schedule. Both papers are owned by Johnson Newspapers of Watertown, N.Y.

The Daily Freeman of Kingston, N.Y., reported the change, noting "the company said the move is an effort to combat rising costs."

“This publishing frequency will help us manage the increasing costs of delivery and printing without having to pass the added expense along to readers and advertisers,” Publisher Roger Coleman said in a prepared statement. “This schedule will also enable us to produce the most compelling and useful local newspaper that fits the community’s lifestyle and support level.”((

Coleman added that the newspapers’ last Sunday editions will be published this weekend and a new weekend edition will debut on Saturday, Feb. 28, the Freeman reported: "He said the weekend edition will include all the features of the current Saturday, Sunday and Monday papers, including coupons and sales fliers, Living Today, USA Weekend, regular columnists, comics, crossword puzzles and Sudoku."((

The publisher’s statement did not say if the changes would result in layoffs.
