Last night God "Hated" Fred Phelps - but we all knew that anyways
I'm so tired of Fred Phelps and his ilk protesting outside all of these events with his hateful signs. I swear God had some sort of divine intervention to give Sean Penn that Oscar just to send Fred Phelps into a tizzy. Personally I hope Phelp's head explodes from all the gay-love that oozed from the Oscars last night because this world would be so much better off without Phelps tainting humanity.

And I put "Hated" in quotes because God does not hate anyone - he might not like the sin but he does not hate.

1. You gotta be kidding me
If there is a god he should be helping the millions of people dying in wars and of hunger - not attending the Oscar ceremony.

2. God doesn't do that any more.
He just helps football teams win and stuff like that nowadays.

5. It'll be okay.
We all forget sometimes. I just prayed the other day for my aunt's health, then realized God doesn't do that stuff any more either.

9. My question is
did God ever do these things in the first place? Or was it mankind's conception of God? God concepts change over the millenia, and right now I think we are in the midst of yet another change in our concepts about Whatever it is that created and continues to create things. Some call It God, some call It scientific principals. What is important to remember is that our concepts of God are not God.

6. Point taken
But I was pointing out the obvious that outside of the Oscars was a hateful man and his ilk protesting because of movies like Milk. And with Milk winning 2 Oscars including Best Actor for Sean Penn - well I think that speaks volumes

4. Phelps' clan is like a circus sideshow minus any entertainment value.
That's why his ass was OUTSIDE the Oscars instead of inside with the real entertainers. I can't wait until his 15 minutes are over.

7. I don't think it was god so much as a Hollywood society still impacted by prop 8.
Either way, it's always nice to see those assholes rejected. The audacity of the Fred Phils crowd is completely unfathomable to me.

12. I wonder how much of that had to do with Penn's win
I mean voting came in the aftermath of Prop 8 and that vote is based on your peer of actors. And Penn is notoriously outspoken so you knew he was going to say something about Prop 8.

16. Given the strength and sentiment around Rourke's performance, I'd probably say a lot.
Impossible to quantify, of course, and it's not anywhere near as though Penn wasn't worthy, making it that much more difficult to really say. It was at least mildly surprising to see Penn win, and given where Intrade was on the subject, I don't think I'm alone in that.

Can't say I mind much either way, though I did want to see Rourke win - the guy has come so far in his life, and it would've been nice to see it come full circle, whereas Penn has been rewarded often enough.

10. Nah, I don't think God had much if anything to do with it
the Academy seems to really favor liberal causes and minority issues. It was more political than anything. The Academy, once again, made a statement.

And, I'm not I have a problem with that or not. I do think the Academy should be more objective at times.

13. Well the beauty of the Academy is the vote is done by your peers
So that means other actors are voting for best actors, other actresses for the actress awards. The other big awards seem to be more critics-based which is probably why Rourke won more of those awards.

Prop 8 was fresh on the minds of many of the voters which may have held some sway over Penn beating Rourke.
