Milton Friedman, William F. Buckley, etc. were strong supporters of legalization.

Take the profit out of trafficking and you take the purpose of the crime out.

Selling to kids would still be illegal.

Driving under the influence would still be illegal.

12. By all measure of logic and common sense, it should be a Democratic issue, if not a bi-partisan one.

Democrats are supposed to be the Party of the people, not the corporation, whether that corporation be Big Pharma, for profit prisons or an intrusive police state profiting from insane polices aimed at the people. If the Republicans use that B.S. canard about Democrats being "soft on crime" Democrats should counter with "they're being strong and smart on the American People's freedom." Democrats should be strong on education and medical reform, I believe these are the keys to managing the issue of drug use/abuse in a sane manner, along with giving relief to people suffering from ongoing pain or chronic illness. The Democratic Party should be strong on green technology and the environment and yet hemp; something George Washington grew, has been demonized as a potential source of fuel, while mountains are literally destroyed to reach the climate destabilizing, dead fuel of coal.

The Republicans are supposed to be against "big government" which is another B.S. canard as this Orwellian Big Brother sellout to corporations profiting from imprisoning the American People, should be anathema to that ludicrous claim. The Republicans are supposed to be for "freedom" in general, of course this is another B.S. canard only invoked when sending our men and women off to die in some foreign land while we imprison more people; 2.3 million; a huge percentage being non-violent offenders, here in the "land of the free and home of the brave" than any other nation on the planet. The Republicans are supposed to be strong against crime and yet this insane policy of waging war against the American Peoples' freedom and privacy has done more to empower and enrich organized crime than anything except outright legalizing organized crime.

Both parties should be strong on national security and yet the War Against Inanimate Objects has only served to destabilize fragile democracies south of our border. Both parties should be strong on fiscal discipline and yet they cut their noses off to spite their faces regarding potential revenue from taxes, not to mention the devastating cost to society from disintegrating families having lost bread winners to prison, drug overdose or addiction in large part because of this dysfunctional, heavy handed, national policy of criminalizing the American People for the vice of seeking artificial, emotional relief from the stress and strain of everyday life.
