but an artist doesn't have to live it, to write about it.
johnny cash (probably my all time favorite singer/songwriter) never went to prison when he wrote folsom blues. he had never killed a man in reno just to watch him die, either.
and earl (a progressive country artist if there ever was one) wrote a song from the perspective of johnny walker lindh (which he got a lot of crap for). however, earl is not a taliban trained terrorist.
ice-t wrote a song from the perspective of a "cop killer". to my knowledge, ice-t never killed a cop.
i totally agree with you that the song SUCKS. i loved south park's riff on "have you forgotten" ... 9/11 9/11 9/11...
but part of being an artist is writing about other's experiences, since they make interesting songs.
not to mention that writers do this too, of course.
