NEW YORK, Feb 23 (Reuters) - News Corp (NWSA.O) President and Chief Operating Officer Peter Chernin is leaving Rupert Murdoch's international media conglomerate, the Los Angeles Times reported on Monday, citing sources familiar with the situation.

Chernin's departure was finalized over the weekend, the Times said on its website. A News Corp spokeswoman was not immediately available for comment.

News Corp has not named an immediate successor, the Times said. Instead, Murdoch will take over many of Chernin's duties, including overseeing News Corp's Fox movie and television operations, the paper reported.

His resignation comes at a difficult time for Murdoch's media empire. Chernin is a well-regarded Hollywood executive, who has been a critical force in the company's success in movies and television.
