The GOP's efforts at diversity - AKA Bobby Jindal and Michael Steele. Will it work?
Edited on Mon Feb-23-09 06:39 PM by RiverStone
Bobby Jindal is the first Indian-American Governor, and the GOP is putting him in the spotlight.

Michael Steele is the first African-American to chair the RNC, and the GOP is putting him in the spotlight.

Here is an example of today's new GOP mindset in today's story about Gov. Jundal:

It's time for another generation to come into play," said GOP strategist Ed Rollins, a CNN contributor. "A lot of Republicans came of age under Reagan, which was 25 years ago ... and we just haven't built on that with young people."

Rollins, a veteran of the Reagan White House, called Jindal, a first-generation American born to Punjabi parents, a "young dynamic governor" with "appeal to younger voters."

The governor is a "textbook Republican" who is "scary smart," Cross added.

And, having an accomplished minority figure represent your party's message doesn't hurt, he said.

"The Republican Party very strongly wants to have a new look," he said. "They're saying, 'We're not just a party of old white guys' and he's part of that appeal."

On one hand, diversity is a good thing even within the party of wacko wingnuts. Yet on the other hand, if their rhetoric still preaches a class society with laws that discriminant against womens' reproductive freedom, the right for those in the GLBT community to marry, and the separation of church and state (for example), than no matter what color the face - hatespeak is still hatespeak.

Do you see this GOP "diversity movement" as genuine, or simply political posturing to try and win back some votes?

For the record, I see it as nothing more than transparent bullshit!

On Edit: Added for the record...

1. James Baldwin said that any Jew who acts like a white man is a traitor to his race. Same applies
to these traitors.

2. No. It's a total disaster in the making....
Anyone with a shred of common sense will see it for what it is - shameless, patronizing window-dressing.
And the moves will alienante their foaming-at-the-mouth racist base.

Lose-lose baby.

10. That's what I think too. I don't understand why they think this
strategy will work. It smells of real desperation to me.

12. It's the Darryl Issa method..
"Bobby" & Michale are the guys out there presenting the "face of diversity", and when it comes down to the end, the RNC will select the person they want, and will cast those two aside..

13. Interesting that apparently being used justifies the means to get there...
The rethugs will NEVER be a party that represents diversity - their charter is inherently anti-diversity.

It is amazing to me that the rethugs think that this is all it takes to change the nature of the beast.
