CHASE Credit Card WARNING! they're robbing us blind
CHASE (formerly my good old WaMu) is ripping off its customers.
I'm closing my card. They moved my payment date up and charged a $39 late fee.

They do not respond to my requests to reverse the charge. This was on the Ed Schultz Show too, so I doubt I'm the only one. This charge was probably buried in the reams of fine print they send that no working fool has time to read. So YES finger-waggers I'm probably at fault, they may have notified me in micro fiche somewhere. It's always 'blame the victim' and never the perps in the business world. It just pisses me off so much that we have to pay off their legalized gambling debts- but when we FAIL to prevent them from robbing us... it's OUR fault!!

I'm so furious and fed up. I'm looking for a nearby credit union next. Me thinks I'm done.

Okay, I feel better now.

5. True dat. But I saw this crash coming for a while, and actually
events conspired to prevent me from being as prepared as I wanted. I used to have my mortgage, card, and cars paid off. But life brings "surprises".

2. Exactly the same thing happened to me.
I immediately canceled.

After I did that, they sent me a bill for $1 finance charge - for what, I have no idea.

Thankfully!! - it was not a credit card I used with any frequency.

But, I'm also going to look for a credit union.

and it will be higher next bill. I would stake the US Treasury on it.

6. I had a Chase MC for 8 years
Originally (for 10 years) it was a Chemical Bank Shell MC (they were great), then Chase bought them out in 1996/7 and the rates started going up, and the due dates started getting changed slightly month to month.

Chase sucks.

13. Even prepaid debit cards are getting in on the act--I just finished giving mine the bum's rush
Edited on Mon Feb-23-09 11:30 PM by rocktivity
Since the year began, Green Dot has stopped posting online payments immediately. As a result, I had to pay extra money out of pocket to keep my cable/internet on and delay work on a new Web domain. Also, Green Dot now recommends that you avoid making recurring payments on the card and warn that car rental companies might hold your deposit for as long as 60 days.

My NEW prepaid debit card arrived in time for me to donate to DU. I suspected Green Dot was no longer working with the right kind of bank, and I was right: My new card accepts deposits through Green Dot if you're willing to wait three to four days!

they. Chase Corporate Office and demand Corporate customer service escalation department. Do not let them transfer you to regular customer service.

I also have been victim of Chase, the attorney that filed the class action law suit is filling for a temporary restraining order against Chase, that should stop them for a while until the end of class action law suit! "

Chase Shrinks Credit Due Dates Without Warning, Profiting Off Fees
Got a Chase credit card? Check your bill to see if the due date shrunk. For the past ten months, the due date on reader NDphoxylady's four Chase credit card due date was the fifteenth. Then, without warning or notice, it became the tenth. NDphoxylady only noticed when she was charged a $39 late fee and a $20 finance charge. When she complained to Chase, they told her that simply changing the due date on the bill was adequate notice. Nu-uh More »

15. It's the trickery that makes people hate banks.
Edited on Mon Feb-23-09 10:46 PM by SOS
And they wonder why no-one on earth trusts them anymore.

The moving due dates, the early close times, universal default, $39 late fees for being 10 minutes past the deadline, rate jacking for no reason, pages of new terms in micro-printed legalese......

Banks need to stop this behaviour.
It is a form of economic suicide.

These tricky fees may have been a cash cow in the 1990s.
Today they are inciting rebellion.

17. Perfect example
as to why we all (those of us still with credit cards) need to keep an eagle eye on the due date and interest rate each time we get a bill.

I have two cc's (one of them through Chase) and so far neither one has changed anything.

Not that it would do them much good anyway, since I pay off the balances each month, and I do online bank payments within two days of receiving my bills. And I've been trying to keep the balances low enough to be able to pay them off each month and to make it nearly impossible for them to lower my credit limit unless they want to drop it to just over $100 for each.

But anyway, with things the way they are these days, we all have to be vigilant no matter what...don't let the bastards get away with any sneaky shit!

18. I do not own one, however...
A good friend of mine lost her father to cancer (caused by mesothilioma) in early January. A few days after his passing, Chase kept calling his house wanting a payment or to find someone to pay them/their late fees. I was with my friend when she answered and spoke to a rep and he didn't seem to have any concern as she fought tears speaking to him just judging by her answers. It seemed he was intent on finding someone to pay up. My friend didn't seem angry about it but she was in grief but to me I was just thinking "how heartless?".

I didn't change to CHASE, they bought WaMu when WaMu tanked. Now WaMu, who was great before Chase bought them, will lose the rest of my business asap!
Not sure how to keep an eye on them, I think I need to be a mind reader to avoid this crap.

21. cancel'd with those bums years ago
Had a card that was closed, and some bogus company charged a 'recurring' charge to it *after* I'd closed it.

Called 'em up and they said I shouldn't have authorized the repeating charge. Told 'em I hadn't and was calling them to try and figure out who it was! Took multiple calls to get it resolved ... and that was with a closed account!

What made me laugh was the computer-generated greeting "Chase, where the right relationship is everything" (or something close). Spoken by a computer. Yeah.

Btw, the recurring charge was for a magazine subscription that I'd never ordered, never received and didn't want. Am a lot more careful w/my accounts now.

Edited on Mon Feb-23-09 11:12 PM by shellgame26
After being a relatively happy WAMU customer for 3 years, CHase comes along and starts charging me a whopping 30% finance charge on my cc balance, even though I was never late to make a payment and I made no purchases whatsoever. Here is my letter to them:

To Whom It May Concern, I am outraged that you would charge me a
whopping 29.99% finance charge. I have always been a good
customer of this bank and have never been late making a payment. This is pure
extortion! And I can see that Chase Bank is back to its old tricks of
sucking the life blood out of working people. I want my tax payer money
back from the TARP funds you acquired in order to finance your mergers
and acquisitions. You are and have always been a deplorable bank. I am searching for a new and reasonable banking institution that is not intent on making its money through
theft. Good Day

24. The $39 late fee has nothing to do with today's economy. THey've done that for a while.
Edited on Mon Feb-23-09 11:56 PM by Kat45
I remember getting a $39 late fee a couple of years ago and what made it worse is that I only owed about $19. The fee was more than the bill! MBNA was just as bad.

Funny thing is, I've had the Chase card for over 20 years and it used to be a great card! For a while, it seemed to go unnoticed if my payment got there a couple of days late. After some time went on, they started charging a late fee but I would be able to call and get them to take the fee off. Then when the high fee came along a couple of years ago, they wouldn't budge when I tried to get them to remove the fee.

One thing I do like about Chase is that when I pay their bill online, they credit the account immediately. With MBNA, it would be about three days until they credited it--and this was on their own site! I'd be trying to pay the bill two days early but they wouldn't credit it until the day after it was due--hello late fee!. WTF! (Yeah, I do have a problem with timeliness.)

25. Probably
they are not the only one, just the ones that got caught.
I have a Citibank Mastercard. I moved in August, and changed my address shortly thereafter with them. Just to have everything on paper, I sent a paper check with the stub of the bill where you can check for address change. They never entered the change in their records, and next bill went to my old address, and forwarded to my POBox which I had opened just to buffer any missing bill/ late in changing address matter, and which I don't go to pickup the mail from everyday, as, DUH, it's far. Ofcourse I did not pay on time (cause i never got the bill) and they charged me late fee, increased my APR from 9.99% to 19.99%, and what not. I had to spend an hour on the phone with customer service to get this sorted out. Thank heavens they refunded the late fee though.

26. Oh, hey, me too. What really killed me was the next month
I got a bill for $1 for the interest on the late fee, even though I paid the late fee on time.

In my case, I received the bill late in the mail, and perhaps made the mistake of telling them that. Years past, Chase had been really friendly and responsive, so I thought it would be no big deal.

Finally, one of the guys I talked to said, "Frankly, this is the only way we can make money."

I'll be really pissed off if they ding my credit record for a single late payment, too.

Anyway, I'll look forward to meeting you when the class action lawsuits begin. Of course, Chase won't be around by then.

29. It's Covering Your Assets...
:sarcasm:

I've caught Chase on various fees they've snuck in over the past year. But they're no different than other banks. These people are out of control...and have been for quite some time. They can jack your rates with no reason (look up the '05 Bankruptcy bill for details) and, as we've seen, have little to no oversight. Who do you complain to? The SEC? Good luck on that.

Chase, I'm told, is one of the few banks that has steered clear of a lot of the disastrous loans and games others have played, but they're no angels. Unfortunately, no one else is either. No matter where you go, there will be extra charges and hidden ones as the banks try everything, while they can, to stash away in case they need to get very liquid very fast.

keeps shrinking. I pay them the day after I get a bill and make the largest payment I can afford. As soon as the bill is paid off, they're history as far as I'm concerned.
