Do you think the right wing will ever come back into power again?
If so, how will they do it? Will Americans fall for the same things they did before: the "national security" threat (commies, terrists, etc.)? Or the "social issues" technique ("abortion? gay marriage? I better get to that voting booth!")? Or will they simply try to buy their way back into power? Or use electioneering, fraud, and electronic mischief?

2. BACK into power?
They may not have congress or the presidency, but somehow almost everything is still going their way.

Or are you talking about like, social conservatives? Those guys and gals are a buffer that is used over and over to prevent any real issues from ever being addressed. They will come back as soon as the reanimation spell is cast again.

4. Of course.
The Dems will eventually overreach, get entrenched and get entitled. The country will again vote for change. The pendulum will swing.

Hopefully, that can be 3-4 decades from now.

5. Across time the control freaks are always at the ready to seize and
hold power.

Which is why Zorro and Robin Hood are such vital figures. They're lucky, they're plucky, and they subvert authoritarianism.

37. So far the result of their scheming is increased irrelevance and mockery.
"We lost because we weren't far enough to the right" is their rallying cry. Oh, but "Hip Hop" Steele is going to change everything! :eyes:

7. It is an inevitability
Our goal is to try to educate people to their wrongness and go from there. There is so many ways the GOP could get back into power: high-ranking scandal, GOP-controlled media propaganda that resonates with teh stupid, terrorist attack, disillusionment regarding "hope and change", etc.

Look at Herbert Hoover's fuckwad of an administration. His policies (deregulation, laissez-faire capitalism) brought up the Great Depression, and helped FDR assume the presidency. After winning 4 elections, FDR dies and gets replaced by a complete fool. Ultimately, Eisenhower is next into the oval office. Odd after the GOP sends us into the Great Depression, FDR saves us from our financial troubles and wins World War II, that we still can't get 3 Democrats in a row into the White House...

They'll be back and sooner than people think. The next President will be a Republican. We'll do all the hard work to get us out of this mess just have them come back and loot and plunder again. It's the way of things. We build it up, they knock it down.

Edited on Mon Feb-23-09 11:10 PM by Selatius
People thought Nixon was bad. Then came Ronald Reagan. People thought he was the bottom of the barrel with Iran-Contra/BCCI. They were wrong. George W. Bush proved that they were all wrong.

Don't listen to me if you want, but you should listen to this man as far as totalitarian control goes:

14. For as long as the President is voted for by the masses
you will always end up with a Reagan or Bush. They can always present as an answer
when the voter doesn't see past the superficial.
If the masses just voted for their local member, their decision would be of better quality.
These local members can then subsequently elect their leader.
This leader then would have no political power, so carpetbaggers would not be interested.
That's my thinking.
Cheers

12. "The revolution won't be televised--it will be online."
That was one of DU's earliest slogans, and it's the reason why we've gotten THIS far.

Of course the Rethugs are terrified of the revival of the fairness doctrine: Look at what we accomplished with only nine per cent of the radio airwaves. And the Internet. And the relatively few shows we've managed to get on national TV.

Unlike the last time the Rethugs got into power, they won't be able to rewrite history. We're on to them. And that the rate they're going, they're piling on the evidence against them like fertilizer.

17. Yes, they will be back in power when Dems get smug and complacent
and act like they will be in power forever, when we become legends in our own minds and self-congratulatory on our greatness. RWers will do it the old fashioned way--to our utter disbelief they will win elections which we, in our wisdom, can only contribute to stealing elections because what voter would not want US in comparison to THEM.

They'll be back they're not going away. Americans are still idiots and will fall for their bullshit again and next time it will be worse. I agree with the post that said the next one could be the next Hitler. It may seem far fetched but I beleive that highly likly considering bush stole the elections, tortured people and you know the list.

33. "Americans are still idiots."
62 million votes for George Bush in 2004 confirmed that for me.

"and will fall for their bullshit again..." Yep, 'cause they're idiots.

"and next time it will be worse." If those 62 million morons from 2004 think Obama's first term is a failure, they will be back with a vengeance and they will be unbearable.

"But, but, but," you say, "we passed the stimbill over their whining."

That's because they wanted it to pass. They know it is needed. They just wanted to be vocal in opposition.

They're one senate vote away from being out. But out they most assuredly are not.

30. Not the far right
As the older generations die off and the younger ones come up, right wing conservatism will die out. The older generation (in general and not DUers) with memories of WWII and communism are the ones that can be whipped up about national security.

35. They are like Machivellian locusts...
They burrow into the earth for about 30-40 years each time they are discovered to be the culprits of society's decline. Then they reappear with the same old "conservative" theories. Cut taxes. Make it easier on the entrepreneurs. Preach about "cutting spending" even as they run up huge deficits for our future generations. Spend huge amounts on rebuilding our once-strong military. We all know the script.
