Week 5 Presidential Week in Review
This week I had some help from wroberts189. With his help there’s a fun item added to the list as well as some important news items. Also new, are the links added to each item on the list starting on Wednesday. Keep the feedback, suggestions and ideas coming. Still working on the subject heading for this. Sorry for the inconsistency, but I think this one is it: Presidential Week in Review.

This week started with signing the stimulus package, moved into the foreclosure fix and by Thursday the media had an Ottawa fixation. Fiscal responsibility and just under 100 items round out the list this week.

February 17, 2009 Tuesday

Obama to sign stimulus bill today in Denver (AP) President Barack Obama is poised to sign into law the most sweeping economic package in decades, a rescue plan designed to create millions of jobs, spur consumer spending and revive the nation's outlook. Capping the biggest victory of his month-old administration, Obama will sign the economic legislation Tuesday in Denver.

3. But My Teevee Tells Me He's A Lame Duck...
Or, if you read some of the post around here, he's not doing enough fast enough.

What you're seeing is just a backlog...almost a plunging action...to get the government functional again. Consider that we've come through 8 years of a government rife with corruption that ultimately rotted to total inefficiency and then you start to understand where the Obama administration has to face and how all of what's been done so far is just the start...there's so much more to do. As Rachel says...scrub, rinse, repeat.

Much of what he's been acting on has been legislation bottled up either by veto or obstruction by Senate GOOPs over the past 2 years. Consider this just trying to catch up...we're not even moving forward yet. It's gonna take time and a lot more heavy lifting.

Kudos to the new administration for getting off to a solid start...here's hoping they continue to fix problems and don't make too many mistakes.

4. I'm pretty computer savvy, but what is this TeeVee thing you speak of?
Is it like twitter with bobbleheads?

Lame duck, huh? Only if Congress shackles him, which would certainly be odd since the Democrats are in the majority. On the other hand, our Dems do not seem to have any better grasp on how to be an effective majority party than they did about how to an effective minority party

5. It's The Box That Barks...
It used to be this device that had knobs on it that you watched Gilligan's Island or Walter Cronkite. Now it's a fishtank with sharks...especially the "all news" channels. It's where anyone can be an "expert" on any given topic at any given moment with little regard to reality and where controversy and sexploitation dictate what we see. Ya know...if it bleeds it leads. The lyrics of Don Henley's "Dirty Laundry" always play in my head.

I give credit to President Obama for trying to reach out...no matter how rebuffed he is or how its framed as being weakness. It's helped solidify his support among the moderates and independents and have driven the repugnicans to the fringes. While many obsess about how he's not getting majorities...the truth is its the repugnicans that have serious problems. All President Obama needs is a Senator here or there to get things through and Pruneface McConnell will be hard-pressed to his fractured party in line.

While many have attacked Nancy Pelosi here, a lot of what President Obama is moving are legislation that was passed in the House over the past two years that couldn't get past the Senate. Or if it did, it would face a veto. Now that obstruction is gone. What this "charm offensive" is doing is starting to rift the repugnicans (look at how the governors are battling about the stimulus money)...and it's gonna spread to the Senate as well...especially if his popularity numbers hold and the 2010 elections get closer.

6. I watch a lot of stuff on the internet but I quit TV about a decade ago
I was a travel nurse and a night nurse (still work nights) and the only time I could watch, there was little news worth watching and an amazing number of informercials. I found out that at 4am, I am incredibly receptive to such marketing. After the knives that could cut a coke can and then slice tomatoes cleanly showed up at my door (by the way, for the record, those knives could do neither and in the light of day, I wonder why I thought that was such a nifty feature), I canceled cable and have never looked back.

My hubby is a videophile so he has this rocking system upon which we watch movies, netflix instant queue feature and way too much YouTube. Comcast keeps trying to get us to take their cable package but we just don't want it.

Now that The Daily Show, The Colbert Report, KO and Rachel are on in their entirety through the internet, I don't find myself the least bit deprived. And I haven't seen an add again for those amazing knives. My loss I am sure, but since we don't drink coke and rarely use tomatoes, I think we can muddle through.

8. Now Don't Be A Snob...LOL
I consider myself a creature of the media age. I've worked in and with the media for the better part of the past 35 years (damn...another birthday...I'm getting old...LOL) and have always studied it...to see how it ticks and what makes it tick. I witnessed the radio "transformation" that turned it from a creative medium into a cesspool for idiots. Growing up with the teevee, it's always been a window into our culture...and not always a pretty one. From an early age, I always knew what came out of that box was a sales job and always to be viewed from whose motive and why. Be it steak knives at 4am or political candidates or bobbleheads. Just like you can't tell a good movie unless you see a lot of bad ones, I feel the same about teevee. Newton Minnow called it the Vast Wasteland, but even in a tundra there are a few signs of life.

The internet has opened a fascinating world of interaction and community. It has become my prime source for information and a highly reliable one. It bypassed the media filter that had long frustrated me (and sounds like you as well) and enabled me and others to interact about what was happening. While we can't talk back at the teevee...we sure can here, and it's been both enlightening and enriching. Not to mention entertaining.

I have to admit I have a vested interest in the welfare of the internet. My business now is working with developing internet broadcasting and while the old medium dies, this one is thriving...and where there's still a pioneering spirit that's open to a lot of creativity. It also keeps me out of trouble. LOL.

20. I just wasn't a good filter for the crap and the sales pitch, especially at 4 am
And just so you don't think I eschew the entertainment side of TV completely (not the snob lob, please anything but the snob lob), I've let my friends introduce me to various series over the years that we're damn good - Babylon 5, Battlestar Gallactica and the newest one, The Big Bang. We get them on DVD and except for product placement, I am not exposed to the sales tactics, to which I am so susceptible.

What I won't watch, even if tied to a chair with my eyes superglued open, is any "reality" show. I once refused to watch Reno 911 until a friend promised me it was a little different from what I was expecting. I went on to watch the whole series and will never, ever, forget the Reading Ron episode.

I love the pioneering spirit of the internet and I'm finding certain things like the mini episodes being placed on the internet by Joss Whedon and other interesting media folks like him to be a very interesting development. My own hubby is peripherally involved with a startup group doing a serialized story on the internet.

7. View weeks 1 - 4 here
http://journals.democraticunderground.com/GinaMaria

We are headed into the 6th week of the Obama administration. The GOPiggies almost succeeded in killing our government. It is in critical condition on life support at this point. They almost brought us to our knees. We have a very far way to go in fixing what's wrong, but looking at it one week at time helps keep me from getting overwhelmed by the daunting task ahead.

Funny thing is, when I first started reading your posts (way back when), you sounded so relaxed and zen and because of your name, I just assumed you had a wireless laptop on a beach in Tahiti :-)

kinda blew me away to learn that you weren't actually writing from Tahiti

I wish someone had done the same with Bush...it would have been so much easier to catch the paterns way back then.
And it is important to have this with new cool Prez. so we can see the progress and the issues being adressed.

I really appreciate your intensive efforts here....:yourock:
