There are lots of people out there who think intimidating, screaming at,
and embarrassing employees is the correct way to manage people.

I've worked for them, talked to/read experiences of, many others who have too.

It would be nice if in the 21st Century, these "managers" were an endangered species.

Unfortunately, there are plenty of these Simon Legrees still around.

Also, don't EVER, if you can possibly avoid it, work for an insecure person.

1. Sad to say that working for an insecure manager is not all that uncommon.
I've always found it amazing what personal attributes are either prized or overlooked when sending someone up the ladder. Shit still floats.

2. Yah, there are lots of shitty managers out there. Quite a few good ones too, thankfully.

3. I won't work for such people, and I make that clear in my initial interview.
I just keep my comments on it short and sweet: "I don't work for abusive people, so I just want to get that out of the way right now." If that makes me sound like I have an attitude and you don't like that, fine, have a nice life. Interestingly, I find when I'm upfront that I respect myself, others respect me in kind. And conversely, if I'm obsequious and slavish, they abuse me. Unfortunately, a lot of people think they have to act like slaves, and have no other choice. In a free country, you certainly do have a choice, but many people simply aren't accustomed to that mindset.

5. Sad but true! A lot of people will NEVER speak up to their bosses about anything,

but they want you to carry the flag.

4. I've noticed
that managers can come with four basic characteristics. They can be nice or a horse's ass, and they can be incompetent or proficient. If s/he is nice but incompetent, you can work with that. If s/he is a horse's ass but proficient, you can even work with that. But put horse's ass and incompetent together - RLH.

7. I worked for a guy like that
Everyone was scared of him - even the other managers - because he was large and loud and often angry. The only people who weren't were three of the programmers - one who would tell him what he could do with his unrealistic time lines and made sure the higher-ups knew what he (the programmer) had given as a time line, and that it had been ignored, and then my friend/co-worker and I, who would openly mock him in front of others, in the hopes that he would never walk down our cube aisle for anything short of an emergency... and it worked.

The most fun we had with him was when he came back from the regional branch after watching some videos on FISH (if you don't know what that is, google FISH program) and was wandering around the cube farm shooting people with a Nerf Gun. My friend and I called him down to ask him what was going on, and he explained that we would be watching some videos on how to have fun at work like he did. I asked him, "So you need a video to show you how to have fun? Isn't that a little sad?" and it then became a conversation between my friend and me while we discussed the ramification of that shortcoming (amongst many others that we just started randomly assigning) while he stood there trying (and failing to get a word in edgewise). Finally, he screamed, "FINE! WHATEVER!" and stomped away. During lunch, my friend and I went to Toys R Us where I bought the largest Nerf gun I could find so I could shoot him, and its range was so good, I could get him anywhere in the cube farm.
