A Paris appeals court has overturned the convictions on terrorism-related charges in France of five former inmates of the U.S. prison at Guantanamo Bay.

The five men were convicted in 2007 of "criminal association with a terrorist enterprise" after returning to France from Guantanamo,

They were handed three- and four-year suspended sentences and were each sentenced to one year in prison. But because they had served time ahead of their trial, they did not return to prison following the sentencing.

During their 2007 Paris trial, the five acknowledged having spent time in military training camps in Afghanistan. But they said they had never put their combat skills to use.

The appeals court delivered its decision on Tuesday.

1. Good
Hell, if mere association with bad characters is sufficient to get you the sentence, nearly every Italian American over the age of 50 should be in Marion on a RICO charge. And I say that as an Italian American. Think of all the Irish who would still be locked up for sending money back to the boys fighting the good fight in Derry during the 1970's. If you think it wasn't common, you're an ignorant fuck. Every McSomebody's Pub in Queens had a collection jar for the IRA, and everyone damn well knows it.
