Why is it so hard for banks and repubs to do the right thing? |
|
Watching tonight's news about how banks continue to blow taxpayer money and reading about repubs wanting to deny help to those who need it just really astounds me.
After the last few decades you'd think I'd be used to it by now, but sometimes I wonder what is it that keeps these people from doing what's right. Our economy is in trouble. People are losing their jobs and their homes. Do they need to lose their job and their home in order to get it?

They want it all and could care less who burns out and dies in the process.

5. instead of nationalizing banks, why not just have government takeover of home mortgages...? |
|
stretch the terms of the loan out to 50...75...even 100-year mortgages that are passed down to the next generation of a family?
all are fixed-rate mortgages at 3 or 4%.
if they want to get money into people's hands quickly to stimulate the economy- let EVERYONE re-do their mortgages, even just the remaining term, at 3.5%...that would give a lot of people a lot of extra money every month.

FYI, this is my take only on the seriously wealthy folks out there who are actively resisting the bank reform/rehab proposals being floated:
1. These people had lots and lots and lots of money invested in bank stocks, and the value of those stocks has been pretty much wiped out;
2. They believe any federalization of the banks, even temporarily, will cause the value of their bank stocks to remain low and never really rise again; ergo, the money they've lost on the devalued bank stocks they still hold will not rise again, and they'll never get their money back.
Are they right that federal bank assistance will keep the bank stock values from recovering?
Do you care?
Separate questions, but this is the motivation of those resisting the idea.
P.S. It isn't Nationalization" so much as it is "receivership," a process that has been central to the workings of capitalism since, well, forever.

If they vote against their ideology, their anti-government constituents will vote them out of office.

8. They have no moral compass |
|
no compassion, no concept of fairness, no ethics. Their God is the God of the Old Testament, one of retribution and judgement, even if they claim to be of the Christian faith. You lost your house? You must be a lazy bum because it certainly can't be because our company shipped your job to Bangalore. Or because you or a family member suffered from a catastrophic illness.
