I never had to worry about an undocumented worker taking my job |
|
My first job was at Jewel grocery store when I was still in high school. I had to join the union to work there. So everyone received the same pay for the same work so there was no financial advantage for Jewel to hire undocumented workers. The union would see to that by guaranteeing everyone the same pay and benefits. All Jewel could gain by hiring an undocumented worker was to put themselves in jeopardy of fines for hiring them.
Same thing at the Ford plant I retired from. The Immigration agents never raided that place looking for undocumented workers the entire time I worked there either. Because there were none.
It worked the same way on the construction sites around here I worked at temporarily during lay offs from Ford. All union and no undocumented workers on any of those job sites.
Anyone beginning to see a connection here?

The only jobs I myself have lost were to younger Americans who accepted lower wages.

3. the incentive to hire undocumented workers needs to be gone. |
|
Businesses that use these workers have an incentive, because they get workers that won't complain about conditions because they don't want to be found to be here illegally, and the businesses can pay them crap for it, too. The only thing that would stop them is that they could be raided... if we took away the incentives, then the practice would most likely stop.
I also notice that people don't pay much attention to undocumented workers until the jobs start disappearing.

6. And I have noticed that some of the most virulent anti-undocumented people are also anti-union |

Anti-union scabs bitching about undocumented workers taking their jobs. Figure that one out.
Strange world we live in.

7. the company my husband works for had a vote to unionize last year. |
|
it was weird how it seemed they had to sneak around to try to get people on board with a vote. I have my husband and two other family members that work for this company, and both besides my husband were not favoring it. well, after the vote failed by 5 votes, they got a rude awakening when no one got a raise this year and no bonuses. but the one area, in NYC, that is unionized did get a raise. it was quite the eye opener. my husband talked to some people who had voted no who have now changed their mind. let's hope so as the next vote is coming around soon. my husband is very much for the union, and has said he wants to be very involved if the union gets in. the company did change their position on the bonuses recently, I think because they know they are going to have a harder time fighting a union this time.
