Isn't this just so SPECIAL?????
Edited on Wed Feb-25-09 10:33 AM by Stinky The Clown

This was sent around by Mayor Dean Grose of Los Alamitos, California.

The message accompanying it was equally special: No Easter Egg Hunt On the White House Lawn This Year.

Edit to add link to the news story. I intended to include it, but hit the "post" button too fast.

10. We have to laugh this stuff off
Or they will keep doing it. I wonder what the President thinks of stuff like this - I'd probably go with his opinion on it.

He didn't say anything about the Post Cartoon either, did he?

They're going to keep it up for the next 8 years - everytime we let it bother us, they win. That's their whole point in doing it.

17. I see no reason whatsoever to "laugh off"....
Edited on Wed Feb-25-09 04:20 PM by bliss_eternal
...something that is neither funny or amusing. I don't 'laugh' at the expense of anyone's gender, sex, racial background, physical appearance, abilities, etc. Doing so would send the message that I approve; I don't.

I think their "point" is to reassert themselves as dominant--in some small way. Their position as "the majority" is feeling threatened, seeing a person of color residing at that address, running the country. Something people like this felt certain wouldn't happen in this country.

19. You approve it by being silent, not by laughing it off
Their point is to dominate and they win when we make ourselves into their victims. That's exactly what they want!

If you ever talk to them you will realize that they get utmost satisfaction out of us getting upset at their shenanigans. They love it! They have no shame.

24. Forgive me. You are correct of course....
...Slavery was soooooo funny. Black men swinging from trees? Hilarious. That back of the bus, separate water fountain thing? Absolutely side splitting.

:sarcasm:

It's attitudes and stances like yours that impede progress.
Based on your reasoning, Rosa Parks went about it all wrong! Why didn't she just laugh and go to the back of the bus? Why on earth did she give them the satisfaction of taking her to jail?

Standing up to crap like this is what gave the world Martin Luther King, Jr., the Civil Rights Movement, black people gaining the right to vote and the NAACP.

Without the NAACP to fight for equality under the law, there would have been no black police officers, lawyers, judges, mayors or senators. No black senators? Guess what...? There would have been no Barack Obama to make his bid for the White House.

So, go ahead and 'laugh off' that which isn't funny and dismiss that which should not be ignored--so you "don't give 'them' any satisfaction." :eyes:

50. Really?
unreasonable defined as--
adj 1: not reasonable; not showing good judgment

2: inconsistent with reason or logic or common sense; "the
absurd predicament of seeming to argue that virtue is
highly desirable but intensely unpleasant"- Walter Lippman

From where I sit, it was completely appropriate to point out the absurdity of your "laugh it off" comment, with examples from history. Where would an entire group be today if they put more value in the concerns/motivations of "their oppressors" than on doing what was necessary to fight for their freedom?

Just an fyi, when a woman, person of color, glbt-q, the disabled, Jews, or other historically oppressed person is faced with imagery intent on slurring them....they tend to not give a shit about 'the concerns' of those attempting to denigrate them.

But it's ever so nice to know that you are more concerned about Big Daddy Denigration's motivations, than about standing against the hate propaganda he's putting out there. :eyes: Yay. Good for you.

There isn't a damn thing funny about the e-mail nor the fried chicken or kool-aid "Obama" bucks or the other racist imagery that's been put out.

46. No. But this kind of stuff is a lot more minor!
Geez, wake up and quit equating everything to its worst possible excess! This cartoon is not equivalent of a lynching. JESUS!!!!! :banghead:

And one thing you have not answered. Why do you wish to continue to satisfy the freepers and make them happy by acting like such a victim over their obvious attempts to make you feel like one? Why do you give them exactly what they want?

And refuse to acknowledge the progress that has been made, even in the face of a black President. What do you get out of this?

...the Holocaust started off with little things, too. :eyes:

...and who are YOU to say what is minor?

Oh and if you had taken the time to read from the first link I sent you, you'd know the cartoon is the visual equivalent of lynching.

This sort of imagery has a history.
When it was no longer legal to hang a black man from a tree, this is the kind of crap they put out there. It's an chicken shit way to say to black people,'you'll always be inferior...and we hate you.' It's an attempt to put a blacks person in their original place.

Respectfully, I'd like to request you make an effort to learn something.

33. I disagree. Ignoring it or laughing it off got a lot of people brutally linched
Because when it comes to bigotry the more it is tolerated the more it shows itself and the more blatant it becomes.

It's a lot like torture. If it isn't stopped then it becomes 'normal' and people treat it as if it's actually something commonplace and even convince themselves it's good.

35. Don't get mad. Get even
I don't think we should just fume over this crap. We should make sure those responsible for it hear from their constituents, sponsors, etc. that cartoons, jokes, etc. that promote racist stereotypes are not only unacceptable and not funny but will result in a loss of votes, funding, etc.

Anyone who thinks this kind of "joke" is funny should find a cartoon about Jews hoarding money or Irish drunks a laugh riot. This kind of humor is not only racist, it is stale, unimaginative and lazy.

Like Jonestown - only it wasn't Koolaid, the followers of Jones actually drank cyanide laced Flavor-aid, a cheap imitation of Kool-Aid. The Flavor-aid flavor they consumed was grape, too, not strawberry as depicted in that incredibly racist currency above.

Dear Mr. Mayor:

Please apologize to your constituents (and all everyone else with an ounce of sense) for your amazing lapse in taste and the inherent racism it exposes.

If McCain had won would you send a graphic showing empty booze bottles in front of the White House to an Irish business person?

I don't think so.

How insensitive and rude can you be!

56. I admit I was confused when i first saw it
not being immediately up on all the racial innuendos. (living in europe is bad for my 'sensibilities') and my first thought was honestly "oh look the president will set a good example by planting a garden. Good idea"... then I read the subtitle...

There are no words that have not been spoken to describe the emotions towards these... things that send this crap around.

to call this bigot scum... is to insult scum to the point i'd rather not use it.

I think republican has become the new slur... because that's the only word I can think of to describe these... things!

I admit I'm NOT for bringing back the fairness doctrine... only making ownership of media FAR more diverse.... and I'd start with making it ILLEGAL for ANY foreign interest to own ANY AMERICAN media outlet - newspapers, radio station, TV stations, cable channel, satellite, ANYTHING that is on the public airwaves MUST be owned and run ON AMERICAN SOIL!

*sigh* :sigh:  oh well, I can only hope there is an afterlife and that these hateful asshole will be judged then, because it feels like they'll never, EVER have to pay for their crimes in THIS lifetime :(
