Source: Matthews says 'Oh God' before Jindal spoke
NEW YORK – MSNBC's Chris Matthews quietly uttered "Oh God" as Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal prepared to give the Republican Party response to President Barack Obama's speech to Congress.

An NBC executive, who requested anonymity because the network is still looking into the matter, named Matthews as the one who made the live mike slip — it was so quiet most listeners wouldn't be able to identify the speaker.

2. After seeing the video, I understand why. The lighting was dim
and ugly, his make made him look pale and colorless and they didn't block him well. I thought the same thing before he even opened his mouth.

11. That's the point
He hadn't said a word yet but his entrance was beyond pathetic. I'm sure that 'Oh God' (or versions of it -mine was WTF!) was echoed by millions who were watching. It was hilarious. I hope Tweety doesn't get into too much trouble.

18. They made him look washed out on a dark set.
I guess their techies are used to only lighting and making up white people.

Bizarre!

shrub was thinking Obama plans to get himself a ranch.

Edited to add "President" Obama and to remove the d from catalyze... if memory serves, I only heard it once.

4. oh my gosh, I hope nobody gets into trouble
Not just because it was hilarious... but it really wasn't intended to be contemptuous or mean--it wasn't even intended to be heard.

6. What was the inflection?
I haven't seen the clip, so I don't know if it was "Oh God this is going to be awful" or "Oh God Bobby gives me the vapors."

8. (posting this on a couple of the threads)
His official "reaction". Again, not even sure what needs to be explained here. One could argue that it was unprofessional and show that he wasn't willing to give Jindal a "chance", but as I said, he's an OPINION commentator. He had said previously that he was not impressed with Jindal, and stagecraft is something that Chris talks about a lot. Anyone who watches his show knows that there personal reaction he has to certain people has little to do with their political affiliation. He's going to "address it" tonight. He has said some offensive things in the past, but I don't get what the big deal with this is.

Matthews: 'I was taken aback' by Jindal entrance

After some confusion over who muttered "Oh God" last night on MSNBC, I reported this morning that it was Chris Matthews not Keith Olbermann.

And Matthews now plans to address the hot mic moment later on "Hardball," of which I've been provided a statement.

"I was taken aback by that peculiar stagecraft, the walking from somewhere in the back of this narrow hall, this winding staircase looming there, the odd anti-bellum look of the scene," Matthews said. "Was this some mimicking of a president walking along the state floor to the East Room?

Also, Jindal was invited on "Hardball" tonight but declined.

13. "Was this some mimicking of a president..."
That's exactly what I thought it was. Even before Jindal appeared, I looked at the setting and thought that they were going to attempt to make this guy look presidential. As is now well known, they failed. I was taken aback by his entrance as well and I turned off the TV about thirty seconds after he started speaking. I kinda wished I had watched him now though.

10. Tweety's excuse (link in post #8) doesn't wash. It's just him mucking up again
He is a juvenile with mysogynist, racial, stereotypical thinking. He steps into it every time on whatever front of his parochialism. He is the schoolyard bully, a physical coward when confronted--look how he acts with Jon STEWART and Ellen DEGENERES. He shuns people like KUCHINICH who look "different" and exhibits his junior high fear of not being with the "popular" clique and catching something from the geekier looking people. That's Tweety.

14. Tweety doesn't like Jindal... he skewered him on "Harball" yesterday
Edited on Wed Feb-25-09 01:43 PM by npincus
re: his hypocrisy and opportunism regarding taking 99% of La's stim and rejecting the 1% designated for unemplyement benefits. I don't remember specifics, but his remarks were personal and contemptous toward Jindal.
