Poll question: Is allowing only Cuban-Americans the right to go to Cuba discrimination?
Edited on Wed Feb-25-09 05:39 PM by Mika
Does allowing only a select segment of the American population their full travel rights represent discrimination against the rest of us?

3. No, it's a stupid policy
but as such the decent thing to do is to allow Cubans to go back to visit family. It would be even worse if even they couldn't go, imo.

I hope Obama acts on the Cuba situation soon.

4. How is not allowing non Cuban-Americans not discriminatory?
Edited on Wed Feb-25-09 06:04 PM by Mika
Millions of non Cuban Americans want to travel to Cuba, and even have family members there. How is keeping the travel ban on millions but allowing a discrete minority to travel there not discriminatory?

I understand your sympathies, but I don't understand your position that it isn't discrimination.

Care to explain?

:hi:

6. Why isn't affirmative action discrimination against whites or men or whomever? :)

:)

Well, because it's remedying a wrong committed against a group. Obviously. (Short answer.) But my point is that sometimes a minority of individuals may possess a "right" that the larger group doesn't possess, and it isn't discrimination, per se. Not the best example, but I hope you get my point. Why do a small group of folks get the choice parking spots? And on and on. Exceptions for small groups of individuals - if for a valid reason - doesn't constitute discrimination against the larger group, imo.

Most folks can welcome their relatives from other countries here in the states for a visit, but Cubans can't generally do that, so an exception has been made to allow Cuban Americans to go back to Cuba.

By the way, I think the embargo should have ended a LONG time ago. :)

7. Good points. But Cuban-Americans have always been allowed to go to Cuba.
Edited on Wed Feb-25-09 07:12 PM by Mika
The discrimination has been against the rest of us non-Cuban-Americans. We are the aggrieved party in this case, not the Cuba-Americans.

If anything Cuban-Americans have been treated much more generously than any other immigrant demographic, via the Cuban Adjustment Act.

For Cuban migrants ONLY - including Cuban immigrants who are smuggled in as well as those who have failed a US background check for a legal visa who make it here by whatever means - the US's Cuban Adjustment Act instantly allows any and all Cuban migrants who touch US shore (no matter how) instant entry, instant work visa, instant green card status, instant social security, instant access to welfare, instant access to section 8 assisted housing (with a $41,000 income exemption for Cuban expats only), instant food stamps, plus more. IOW, extra special enhanced social programs designed to entice Cuban expatriation to Miami/USA.

NO other immigrant group is granted this level of immigration perks, and not even native born Americans are granted the section 8 housing income exemption that Cuban immigrants are.

They have been treated especially well by the American people/taxpayers. Why should we then be aggrieved by being travel banned, while those who we ingratiate, because they supposedly "escaped" Cuba, be exclusive to this right to go to Cuba?

It is utter hypocrisy.

8. I agree about Cuban immigration status
However, when talking about travel to Cuba, their Cuban relatives generally can't visit in the U.S., whereas most of our relatives from other countries can visit us here; hence, Cubans are allowed to go back for reasons of familial affiliation. Sorta' like they get the favored parking spot to visit...in Cuba. :)

9. Cubans in Cuba can't visit the USA because the USA won't grant them a freakin visa.
Edited on Wed Feb-25-09 07:41 PM by Mika
Believe me, I know. I have relatives in Cuba. I would be happy to pay for their trip, as would most anyone with a relative there, but the US won't grant them a travel visa.

The end result is that Cubans can't visit the US and Americans can't visit Cuba. ALL because of US policy, not Cuban policy.

The latest proposal ends up punishing Americans even more, by relegating us to 2nd class, travel banned citizens.

Its pure insanity.
