How Does Mary Maitlan Get Away With the Old "Supply Side" Canard?
There she was on Morning Joe, with a straight face, proclaiming that we're knee-capping businesses with taxes, as if that were a fact and as if she actually knew what she was talking about. Then she has the nerve say, in the same matter of fact manner, that all of history supports this proposition.

That's a lie. Nothing supports her proposition. She clearly knows absolutely nothing about economics and, like every rightist bloviator I have ever encountered, thinks nothing about lying to try to make her point.

How do these people get away with doing violence to the truth like this?

1. Hubby has enough connections to keep her from being carted away.
She'd have been in the MSM dumpster long ago otherwise.

2. But it's not just her.
It's all of them, and of course Mika and Scarborough, dumbasses that they are, went along with it.

5. Thanks, but that might put me over the edge.
The Reagan myth building makes me want to puke almost as much as the phony economic sophistry.

7. It helps that her face is physically incapable of being anything other than 'straight.'
That woman would look wooden and lifeless in a Clutch Cargo cartoon.

8. For some reason, she's on the Toady Show, too
Given free rein to just spout anything that's been rattling in her empty little head for the last 25 years, all the while her Clutch Cargo features never. Move. A. Millimeter.

My goodness, if the tax break for botox is ended, Matalin will be in a shit world of hurt!

9. supply side economics must only ever evolve into a level economy
level economy = stagnant economy

Basically, when you decide that manufacturing costs and labor are cheaper overseas where there is less collective bargaining and environmental constraint, eventually you will modernize marginal economies, and they will in turn build environmental and human rights into their labor and manufacturing costs.

Once that happens you no longer have a weakness to exploit, but you've exploited that weakness to date based on sacrificing your local manufacturing and employment obligations.

When you give a billionaire a trickle down tax cut, he buys a yacht in the bahamas that was manufactured in the netherlands and docks it in Puerta Vallarta.

It's trickle down all right - just not to Americans.

successful supply-side economics is a gradeschool unicorn myth.

10. I recently caused a repug to stop speaking for the night
Edited on Thu Feb-26-09 10:44 AM by flobee1
by asking him "if tax cuts work so well, why are jobs still being shipped overseas instead of hiring americans? I mean, if business is complaining about high american wages, and the bush tax cuts were supposed to counter it, why are GM and everyone else moving to Mexico?"

his political talk ended then and there, the subjuct was immediately changed.

It was like a good will hunting moment
"You got that from Gordon Wood!"

11. because the other talking heads do not know economics either
So they don't get challenged on their nonsense. Besides that, most of the people on TV are making $500,000 a year or much, much more for sitting around in nice clothes and yakking. They don't want higher rates on their huge salaries either. Remember how Charles Gibson tried to claim in the New Hampshire debate that two professors would make $250,000 and thus pay the higher taxes and the crowd burst out laughing? This is what Veblen called a vested interest.
