Portage (Wisconsin) Soldier Killed In Afghanistan
PORTAGE, Wis. -- The community of Portage is mourning a soldier who was killed in Afghanistan. Army Spc. Dan Thompson, 24, was killed Tuesday by an improvised explosive device in Afghanistan while serving with an Illinois-based Army reserve unit.

Friends and family members of Thompson said he had a passion for cars, and they said they'll miss his contagious happiness the most.

..."It's a waste of somebody who accomplished so much in 24 years. He had a great job, a beautiful brand new home. He had a college education. He had a beautiful girlfriend. He accomplished more in 24 years than most people do in their lifetime," Lisa Thompson said. "It just angers me to think that he would have completed his eight years in the military as of December 2009."

"He was the love of my life. I wish he was here. I know he'll be looking out after us," said Maria Steinke, Thompson's fiancée. "It's just hard to believe. (I have a) very great mother-in-law, even though I'm not married. He was just a wonderful person."

I just don't get why we are sending our military over there.

4. Actually, the "why" is pretty fuzzy.
Are we protecting natural resources? Bringing Democracy? Chasing down a criminal we haven't been able to find for 8 years, who might be long dead?

What exactly is it we are going to do with the Taleban? Convert them to our way of life? Kill them all?

3. Sad news. Close to where I grew up -
and there are thousands more from around the country. Not just sad, but unnecessary. We don't need to be sending our young men off to war. US out of Iraq, Afghanistan & Pakistan now! (and that's just the declared wars...)

As John Lennon said, "war is over - if you want it"

6. Small, world, undeterred - just found out today that this kid was the 2nd cousin
of one of my best friends from high school. She still lives in the Westfield area. Crap.
