http://www.rockymountainnews.com/All you can say is damn. 150 years this paper has been in Denver, can you believe after all that time it's going out of business? Actual story here: http://www.rockymountainnews.com/news/2009/feb/26/rocky-mountain-news-closes-friday-final-edition/It's one of the two big papers left. Now Denver is only going to have a single newspaper from now on.

2. It says they're publishing their last edition tomorrow... |
|
I don't know with certainty what that means. Could mean either really.

5. Yeah, they are still doing web, but they still have to find a buyer for it: |
|
"Scripps said it will now offer for sale the masthead, archives and Web site of the Rocky, separate from its interest in the newspaper agency."
It's a tabloid sheet style, so it's easier to read. The only other paper, the Post, is still broadsheet.

I grew up in Denver and always preferred the tabloid format, and they used to be far more balanced than the Denver Post.

12. The Denver Pest was always (according to everyone I knew) the mouthpiece of the parasites. |
|
I remember doing a class paper examining the same story in both papers and showing how biased the Post was. I got an 'A'.

9. Sad, but most cities already only have one paper... |
|
and of those that do have two, most of them will soon have one -- San Francisco is a good example, where the Chronicle is about to fold, leaving only the free-distribution Examiner and a host of altweeklies.
Another example is the Seattle P-I, which is likely to close soon, leaving the Seattle Times.
It's really sad, but most cities can barely hold on to one paper these days, let alone two. The ad dollars simply aren't there, given both the Internet and the current economy. Add to that the fact that free online content has all but killed subscription and rack revenue, and it's a shitty time to be in print journalism.

a scrappy independent--decades ago!
Feh--they would have hired me if I had accepted their ridiculously low wages $50 for a full page weekly column? in the Rocky?
they suck/ But I remember loving to read Peanuts. That was good.
I'm sorry the jobs are leaving--

14. You're right, of course re: the Rocky's rightward move/slant |
|
But, I still hate to see it go. Besides loosing all the jobs, all the rabid CO RWers will now pollute the editorial pages of the Denver Post...

17. Precisely. No one wants to read right-wing propaganda. |
|
Americans want news. They get the right-wing corporate crapola propaganda pumped at them relentlessly through TV and Radio. A newspaper pumping out that crap, too, is needless -- and the RM News just found out. I think more right-wing propaganda outlets will collapse this year. Americans are sick of their spin, twist, and lying.

The Rocky Mountain News history is intertwined with the History of this City. Been here since 1859. It's like losing a part of Denver.
