John Bolton at CPAC: The Benefits of Nuking Chicago

CPAC is filled with vampires.

John Bolton at CPAC: The Benefits of Nuking Chicago

— By Jonathan Stein

UN Ambassador John Bolton believes the security of the United States is at dire risk under the Obama administration. And before a gathering of conservatives in Washington on Thursday morning, he suggested, as something of a joke, that President Barack Obama might learn a needed lesson if Chicago were destroyed by a nuclear bomb.

Appearing at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), the nation's largest annual conference of conservative activists, Bolton, one of the hardest hardliners of the George W. Bush administration, spoke at length about Obama's naiveté and how various nations – Russia, North Korea, Iran – will be exploiting the new president. The most dramatic moment of his speech may have been when he cracked a joke about the nuking of Obama's hometown.

"The fact is on foreign policy I don't think President Obama thinks it's a priority," said Bolton. "He said during the campaign he thought Iran was a tiny threat. Tiny, tiny depending on how many nuclear weapons they are ultimately able to deliver on target. Its, uh, its tiny compared to the Soviet Union, but is the loss of one American city" – here Bolton shrugged his shoulders impishly – "pick one at random – Chicago – is that a tiny threat?"

Bolton wasn't the only one who thought this was funny. The room erupted in laughter and applause. Was this conservative catharsis, with rightwingers delightfully imagining the destruction of a city that represents Obama? Or perhaps they were venting vengeance with their laughter. (Bolton is no stranger to inflammatory remarks. He once infamously quipped, "There are 38 floors to the UN building in New York. If you lost 10 of them, it wouldn't make a bit of difference.")

At CPAC, the Right's most fevered beliefs about Obama live on, with speakers portraying him as a radical liberal who wants to compromise American values, hand hard-earned taxpayer dollars to the shifty poor, and, as Bolton repeatedly pointed out, weaken America's defense.

Who, besides a monster, would applaud the nuclear annihilation of an American city?

it was stupid when the rw'ers labelled everyone who criticized the us and bush as a traitor. Its no less tiresome when we do it here everytime someone says something critical of Obama or the Democrats.

I have a sad feeling that respect for the First Amendment is at an all-time low. I blame the repubs for that in large measure, but we can and should be better than them

55. Bolton, the neocons and their beard, Smirko McCokespoon, have reduced the national security.
They've looted the Treasury, pushed the middle class to penury, and lied the nation into an illegal, immoral, unncessary and costly war. That's more than the NAZIs and the Commies ever managed.

Besides, I ascribe to Adlai E. Stevenson's definition:

"Corruption in public office is treason."

It was instant addiction. It caused America to go temporarily insane, and for 8 years they had carte blanche to pursue every hare-brained domestic and foreign policy on their wish-list.

That's why these ghouls keep hoping for another episode of mass terrorism. They want their carte blanche back.

66. you must have been like a pig in mud the last eight years
what with chimpy and his fellow repubs questioning the patriotism of anyone who dared express a contrary word about their policies and arresting "funny looking" people based on a off hand remark or bit of black humor.
Here's one for you: Presumably you'd have locked up this guy and thrown away the key:

“They always holler at us to get an education. And now I have already received my draft classification as 1-A and I have got to report for my physical this Monday morning. I am not going. If they ever make me carry a rifle the first man I want to get in my sights is L.B.J. They are not going to make me kill my black brothers.”

Fortunately, your stunted view of the Constitution didn't prevail. He was not jailed.

And one more for good measure:
Charles Evers and the NAACP could be found civilly liable for speech advocating the boycott of certain white-owned businesses. Evers, field secretary for the NAACP in Mississippi, had given impassioned speeches encouraging fellow African-Americans to participate in the boycott. He made some highly charged statements, such as “If we catch any of you going in any of them racist stores, we're gonna break your damn neck.”

You presumably wouldn't find his speech to be "protected". But then again, you'd be wrong.

That, my friend, is truly pathetic. You care not a bit about the First Amendment. That is beyond truly pathetic.

Where is the strawman? You think Bolton should be arrested for making a stupid, asinine joke about blowing up a city. THe supreme court has held that far more specific sounding threats, clearly not made jokingly, are protected speech. Bridge the gulf for me einstein. I'd love to hear your first amendment jurisprudence. That at least would be funnier than your lame attempts at humor on this thread.

49. There's a few people even here who parrot his talking points on Afghanistan and Iran.
So I'm not surprised he was able to pack a room with right-wing wackos who would find something like that funny.

They're fucking demented.

50. This was a terrorist threat....
.... Bolton should be arrested and questioned by the FBI for this.

Does he have prior knowledge of something yet to happen?

52. If any one of us had said anything like that about any American city,
we would be tasered, locked up, and studied intensively by a team of psychiatrists and psychologists to prove we were sane enough to stand trial for terrorism AND treason.

WHY THE FUCK do Republicans get away with threatening entire US cities AND the President of the United States of America (two different presidents if you go back to Helms threatening Clinton's life)? People who threaten or incite violence like that are nothing more than domestic terrorists and should be treated as such.

53. assuming you are right about what would've happened if a Democrat in a comparable position
to Bolton had made those remarks, do you think such a response (being labelled terrorist) would have been appropriate?

59. That's an insult to the Vampire community
I'd put them one step below your common zombie. The slow moving Romero zombie, not these 100 yard dash in 3 seconds new zombies.

63. this really bothers me
I am sick of hearing the repug mantra, "we're the ones who can keep you safe." They're the ones that dropped the ball on 9/11. The * administration was warned by the outgoing administration that terrorism would be their first priority. What did Ashcroft do? It seems like he concentrated on those sinful vices-prostitution and drugs. I mean Chong was a real threat to our country, as well as, those prostitutes in Louisiana. It looks like the August PDB was ignored, and yet, the neo-cons are still doing the same mantra about protecting us. Well, they didn't protect us on 9/11 and they didn't protect us when anthrax appeared. They use FEAR as a weapon against the American people (in my opinion).

And a side note-I read somewhere that grounds for Bolton's divorce was he wanted to "swing" and his wife did not. What is it with these neo-cons claiming family values BS-their rhetoric doesn't match their actions!!! Scalia mentioning group sex and Bolton's swinging. That doesn't include those who were caught soliciting and pedophilia.
