Wingnut LTTE calls Jesus a Marxist (with responses!)
Hallett evoked another philosopher
(Columbus Dispatch, February 20, 2009)

I agree with some of the Sunday Forum column "You want out of this economic mess? Here's how to do it," by Dispatch Senior Editor Joe Hallett, but one line bothered me. In his item, "Don't give stuff to people who don't need it," he said, "to ensure that those with means get less and those without get more." Doesn't this sound like Karl Marx, who said, "From each according to his ability; to each, according to his need"? Just a comment.

TOM DEHN
Delaware

Here are a couple of responses to Dehn's snide "comment":

'Distribution' thought
(Dispatch.com, February 24, 2009)

In his Feb. 20 letter, Tom Dehn frowns on Karl Marx's words "From each according to his ability; to each, according to his need." Although that precise wording does belong to Marx, the idea is older. The King James version of the New Testament's Acts 4: 32-35 describes Jesus' disciples as pooling their possessions; then "distribution was made unto every man according as he had need." Just a comment.

Comment by Hallett also evoked Scripture
(Columbus Dispatch, February 27, 2009)

I respond to last Friday's letter "Hallett evoked another philosopher," from Tom Dehn. He said Dispatch Senior Editor Joe Hallett's comment about "ensuring that those with means get less and those without get more (Forum column, Feb. 15)" reminded him of the philosophy of Karl Marx.

But I have this observation: I recently was reading a book in which another philosopher had much to say about helping the less fortunate among us.

That philosopher said, "For I was hungry, and you gave me meat; I was thirsty, and you gave me drink; I was a stranger, and you took me in; naked, and you clothed me; I was sick, and you visited me; I was in prison, and you came unto me." Doesn't this sound like Jesus Christ, who went on to say, "Verily I say unto you, inasmuch as you did it to the least of these my brothers, you did it to me?" Just a comment.

DONN SMITH
Columbus

Fun fact: I know of this man. When Dehn contracted cancer a number of years ago, his officemates all chipped in money and vacation time to help him out, as he was unable to afford the necessary care. Dehn took the money without a word about Marxism, or Socialism, or Communism. And just listen to him now.

1. Jesus was a long haired, sandal wearing, anti-establishment Socialist
he fed the masses, helped the poor, and cured the sick. He did not have big helmet hair, did not wear a suit, did not preach from a big ass building, never held fundraisers for a "building fund", he never diddled his church secretary.....

2. It would be harsh, but maybe you should put that in an LTTE
About him taking donations from his officemates.
