My cousin just got laid off.
She worked for State Street doing techie stuff. Hubby is only sorta employed (at will, by the job, odd hours) while he studies to enter the electricians' union.

They have two toddlers to care for. And a couple of dogs. And house and car payments (they have a regular mortgage, not a sub-prime one, although the house has lost value since they bought it in mid-2006).

My cousin and her husband are tough people, but I'm still worried about the kid.

1. Of course--you have a real concern there
At least your cousin will get unemployment benefits, and hopefully she lives in a state that is taking the stimulus money so those will last longer.

Since she's a techie, may I suggest something? Medical billing. It is a hot field, and one soon to get hotter as soon as we know exactly what kind of electronic medical records will be required. With the stimulus, she can take a course and should be able to find ready employment.

2. We're Massholes,
so between unemployment and severance, she'll be okay for a while. She spends money like it's water, though.

Thanks for the tip. I'll pass that one.

3. I'm so sorry to hear that.
Tell her to file for unemployment immediately - food stamps too. There's also help w/food from this wonderful organization:

Since it was a state job; any chance she'll be called back? Here's hoping she finds employment soon. :hi:

4. State Street is the name of a financial firm, so I doubt it.
Thanks for the link.

5. I misunderstood - thought she worked for the state.
I just read your reply that your sister spends money like water.

I've had to dramatically change the way I live since I got laid off a month ago; my kids have had a harder time than me because I can't just hand them money anymore. It's doable though; I'll be OK for awhile with severance and unemployment, a wonderful SO and good friends and family.

Tell her to hang in there!
