They: Hi, is this (obvious female name)?

Me: Um, no.

They: We're conducting a survey (other conversation eliminated). How many adults are in your household?

Me: 2

They: And how many are male?

Me: one

They: And how many are female?

Me: Um, one. How many other choices are there?

(at this point I have to acknowledge the caller was very apologetic, and recognized how stupid the questions were, but she had to do it)

They: And are you the female?

(sigh)

I'm unemployed and have cancer. On the bright side, this is probably the best time to do it, given the job market.

And just as I'm trying to get over "texting" as a verb, I now hear on NPR about "sexting", which is teenagers sending photos of themselves (unclothed) to friends. Somehow in the last year, technology has managed to eclipse me, and I've always been on the cutting edge. I guess I need to take more accelerants or something. Wow.

"I'd love to talk with you, but I don't speak a word of English." I can almost see the confused look on their face.

Not that I've done it. Just asking how long it would take. To remove the headset. From ringing ears.
