The Sanford Plan
Let’s get real, folks. We all know Mark Sanford has about as much chance of becoming President of the United States as Katon Dawson does of winning a lifetime achievement award from the NAACP. But, if a former segregationist presidential candidate can impregnate an underage black girl, never publicly acknowledge their bi-racial daughter, and then can brag about his "deep roots" in the black community and win an Urban League award, I'm not entirely ruling it out. Sure, the unGov knows he probably can't win a national election with all-white country club memberships, the rebel flag, and a legacy of state failure hanging over his head. But, running is one of his hobbies, and winning the top job isn't necessarily the plan.

The Sanford Plan is a lot like the Tony Montanta plan: money and power. By putting himself out there as an obstructionist to all things Democrat and Obama, Sanford gains more media exposure, more notoriety, and becomes the darling of conservatives. By “standing up” to the black man in the White House, flying the rebel flag over the State House, and trying to keep us poor and uneducated Sanford is sending a message to other rich, white post-confederate plantation owners and Hamptons elities that he’s keeping the black folks, rural folks, womenfolk, and uppity middle class wannabes in check in the Palmetto State. A few of those undesirables can become successful, lest we all become suspicious, but not enough to inspire massive flight by rich, establishment folks who can afford $3.5 million dollar homes on the South Carolina coast.

So, despite his failings as a governor, fiscal conservative, and leader of the SCGOP, he can find a "liberal" affinity group to blame all of his failings on. Of course, hard-core conservatives, a dying breed more desperate for love and attention than a Young Republican, will eat it up and throw it back up in the form of campaign contributions and public displays of affection. Sanford will likely go on to start his own PAC or whatever it is people do when they get a lot of campaign cash. He can also fancy himself as a clean-shaven Moses leading the GOP out of the wilderness, even though he’s a Libertarian. But, Republicans aren’t worried about a false prophet, just a black one.
