Protesters chant slogans outside the venue where former US President George W. Bush was speaking to an invited audience of Calgary businessmen on Tuesday, Mar. 17, 2009. The event was Bush's first speaking engagement since leaving office in January.

Protests greet Bush's first speech as ex-president
27 mins ago

CALGARY, Alberta (Reuters) – More than 100 protesters chanted "war criminal" and flung shoes in Calgary on Tuesday, angry that former U.S. President George W. Bush was in the Canadian city to give his first speech since leaving the White House.

At least two demonstrators were hauled away by police after brief skirmishes, as 1,500 business people in the oil patch city waited outside a convention center for an hour to pass through tight security and enter the C$400-a-plate ($315) luncheon.

Media were barred from the invitation-only event, during which Bush had been expected to reflect on his eight years as president.

"He is a war criminal who fought an illegal war, and there are some who say he was never elected democratically, so there are some who say he should be arrested as soon as he comes here," said a woman dressed as a Guantanamo Bay prisoner, who called herself Ivana Nomobush.

She had brought with her a makeshift "shoe cannon" that catapulted footwear, but complained that security personnel were not letting her use it.

The shoe theme is an homage to Iraqi reporter Muntazer al-Zaidi, who was sentenced last week to three years in prison for hurling his shoes at Bush in December.

7. I checked it out twice, around 11:00 and 2:30
At 11:00 there were about 40 people shouting at the police, at 2:30 when I came back with a camera it was pretty much this guy still shouting at the same police and anybody who happened to walk by.

The guys on the left were posing for pictures infront of the line of cops, thanks to the guy in the office who lent me his camera.

Disappointed with the turnout me and my boss who worked on the Obama campaign played "Spot the Secret Service Agent" who were sort of conspicuous wearing suits outside when it was 20 degrees.

There were more police, media and gawkers than there were protesters.

20. Mar. 20, Shock and Awe Day. Tack old shoes to a STOP sign in protest.
The shoe has become the symbol of opposition to Bush and his illegal war.
Hang your old shoes somewhere in protest, and throw them at an effigy of Bush.

13. 1500 suits pay $400 Cdn a plate to listen to Chimpy??
Who drove 3 businesses into the ground that were gifted to him, before he drove an entire country into the ground as POTUS that he stole in two elections.

What were these imbeciles hoping to learn from him?

What not to do?

How to be a white collar criminal?

How to dupe 50 million fools?

Twice??

"Fool me once, shame on...shame on you...fool me..you can't get fooled again"

Unless you are a RWer or one out of 1500 Canadian suits!!

Did the Chimp make shadow characters with his hands on a projector screen??

I am sure that he doesn't know how to make a Power Point presentation.

Every word you wrote is pure gold. Thank you!

BTW: The suit in blue looks like he's laughing at Bush's two projectile shoes. LOL!

16. Calgary is Canada's Big Oil town
I'd dare him to venture further east - or west.
They'd crucify him in Vancouver.

He shoulda been arrested under some International law.

17. Probably Calgary is the only place in the country
he dared show his face.

I wonder how many protesters actually turned up... CBC commentator said "a few dozen" but then went to the reporter at the scene who said 2 or 300. As they always estimate downward for these things I'm thinking at least 500 protesters were there.

31. Since when does the Executive Branch
Prosecute people?

I want Bush prosecuted as much as the next person, but expecting Obama to drop everything right now and press for this is lunacy at its highest.

If he stands in the way of prosecution, I'll be the first to blame him. He's not doing this.
