This photo was taken by photographer Jack Bradley and depicts the exact moment this boy, Harold Whittles, hears for the very first time ever. The doctor treating him has just placed an earpiece in his left ear. Date unknown.

1. I read somewhere that after a certain age, our brains can no longer interpret sounds at all
if we've never had that input before.

2. Most deaf people hear some sounds. It's just not distinguishable.

3. it also seems I've heard the same for sight. If you're given sight after a certain age
you won't be able to "see".

4. An acquaintance who lost his hearing as a child was fitted
w/ implants several years ago.

His biggest surprise? Body sounds. Stomach growling, etc. That pic made me think of him and what it must have been like the first time he, hearing restored, visited a public restroom.
