Schools Postpone Some Activities Due to Quake Fears
Schools Postpone Some Activities Due to Quake Fears

By BONNIE BUCK and JOHN CADIZ KLEMACK

Updated 11:38 AM PDT, Thu, Mar 26, 2009

Centralia School District in Buena Park, CA postpones after-school activities after the Governor's Office of Emergency Services issues a notice to be prepared for earthquakes.

Dozens of small earthquakes continue to rattle the Imperial County area near the Salton Sea, following a moderate 3.9 shaker that struck at 8:25 p.m. Wednesday and a 3.0 at 10:12 p.m. Since Saturday, scientists have recorded at least 175 quakes near the Salton Sea area, including several that were magnitude-3.0 and larger.

1. We need to be prepared for quakes ALL the time. And we don't know
enough about where and when to be closing schools many miles away from the suspicious area. BUENA PARK???

Buncha Chicken Littles. Are they gonna keep the school closed every day, maybe for years, until the Big One hits???

Why don't they just cancel school too?

3. Umm...Buena Park?? Seriously??
I had to re-read the beginning of that article a few times because I thought they were surely mistaken. If they were in San Bernardino or Riverside, I could see the concern but Buena Park?? How silly.

5. Might be an older school building on fill or sand.
I know if a 6.0 or higher let loose in the Salton Sea area, I wouldn't want to be on fill anywhere within 200 miles. Especially if there could be things that can drop or fall on students.

4. I felt the 3.9 here out here in San Diego -
Over a hundred miles away; but then, we're on a mesa ridgeline, so you never know what you're going to feel; 5.0's that are closer might not register depending on where the earth-shadow for the S wave is.
Felt almost like being back on the ship, a shallow rocking motion with a very low, almost sub-audible rolling rumble. It was more a recognized awareness than an actual feeling of "hey, this is an earthquake".

There's a lot of activity still going on in that area. Some scientist are waiting to see if these are actual fore-shocks, or just some minor stress adjustment like the Mammoth Lake swarms about ten years ago.

I was on an AFB in Misawa - you couldn't even keep your footing. We just laid down on the pavement and prayed.

On 26 May, 1983, a major earthquake - named the "Nihonkai-chubu (Japan sea ) Earthquake of 1983 -The magnitude was invariably given as Ms 7.7 (BRK), 7.7 (PAS), 7.8 (PAL) and as 7.9 (Mw). Occurred in the Central Sea of Japan (Japan Sea). The earthquake generated a major local tsunami which was destructive in Japan and Korea. Almost all of the destruction and deaths near the northern coast of Akita and elsewhere in Japan and Korea were caused by the tsunami.
