Flowers to Elizabeth were a great first step. NOW let's show what we can do! |
|
Don't get me wrong, I'm not denigrating any DUer for sending flowers to Elizabeth Edwards. I think it was a beautiful, inspiring effort. And it's obvious that Elizabeth appreciates it and is inspired to work even harder because of the inspiration that YOU, DU, has given her.
That being said, I think it is time that we spend just as much effort and energy into a mass DU donation for Cancer Research.
I'll admit, this is personal for me. My Mother died of cancer when I was 11 years old. My stepmother - who was just like a real mother to me - died of cancer. My father died of cancer. My favorite aunt had cancer, but managed to beat it.
My mother, stepmother, and father all requested that donations be made in their name to cancer research in lieu of flowers, just like the Edwards fanily did.
So, I beg of all DUers, let's start a fund to cancer research in Elizabeth Edward's name. If you paid for flowers to Elizabeth, please send the same amount to cancer research. We can even send her a notice of how much we donated in her name, if we wish to go that route.
C'mon, DU! Pony up! For you younger DUer's, you may even be saving your own life one day!

3. I'm really old and they have been searching for a cure for cancer |
|
longer than I have been alive. If we really want a cure for cancer we, and that's every American, should open up a trust fund. When it reaches say a billion dollars then annouce whoever finds a cure for cancer gets the money. Bet we'd have a cure within the week. I have always said if you pay people to search for something, they ain't never gonna find it, but it you offer them a pot of gold IF they find it - Eureka!!!!

but I've always believed 'they' have a cure for cancer and other diseases - can't have too many people living too long. Over population.
Please, ignore me. I'm just a really tired today and bitchy. Don't ask.

6. I don't think you're crazy... |

I'm diabetic, Type 1. Managing diabetes, the whole financial scale of it in this country is huge. Even if you had a cure, you'd only have to "cure" someone once... why not keep us all as cash cows, now, shall we? Ugh. I understand your mindset.

7. Your certainly not crazy. I believe you're right on the button. We |
|
haven't had a "cure" since polio, and researchers probably figured out then that it wasn't in anybody in the medical or research field's best interest to find "cures" for anything. I truly believe they have a cure for AIDS but it's just so damn expensive to keep people alive - why should they care about what kind of life these poor people are living? I hate being so cynical, but somebody show me a reason not to be on this subject and I'll be glad to listen.

I'd be in for this - if we make it international. A fund to be distributed among all Cancer Societies of the member nations of DU and their contributors (proportionally, of course).

Start a thread asking for pledges perhaps? Even small amounts can add up.

I've lost family and friends to various cancers over the years. I don't have a lot to give but I would definitely give what I could.
