Did anyone catch the first episode of this miniseries last night? I did. It was excellent and hopefully, it will be rerun.

PBS documentary miniseries "We Shall Remain" revisits Native American history
by Dave Walker, TV columnist, The Times-Picayune
Monday April 13, 2009, 5:00 PM
pbs

Its first episode debuting at 8 p.m. Monday (April 13) on WYES-Channel 12, the "American Experience" documentary series "We Shall Remain" attempts to retell American history through Native American voices.

It does so by blending textbook history with the oral-tradition accounts of contemporary tribe members, and sometimes blood relatives of the original participants.

The titles of the series' five 90-minute episodes draw the map: "After the Mayflower," "Tecumseh's Vision," "Trail of Tears," "Geronimo," "Wounded Knee."

Several filmmakers - including Ric Burns, brother of Ken, "New York: A Documentary Film," "The Way West" -- worked on the project. Burns wrote, directed and produced episode two, which recounts the inspiration of two Shawnee brothers to halt white westward expansion and establish an Indian nation. It airs at 8 p.m. April 20.

1. It was brilliantly done with out sentimental or ideological twists

Very very informative. Every history teacher should use it in their classrooms.

Can't wait untilthe next one is shown.

3. Me, either. I picked a good day to have my sat teevee turned back on.
I didn't know ANY of the main actors on the native American side. The episode really drilled down into the stakes of early collaboration among the immigrants and the indigenous people, into the politics already in place in that region before the waves of European immigration, into the challenges "Phillip" faced when it was his turn to lead. He, in particular, has always been a figure of ridicule in mainstream American culture and nothing could be farther from the truth.

15. My Mom had a relative
on the Mayflower.

One of my Dad's great great great great great great great grandmother was a Pokanauket (Wampanoag). I think she was one of the "Praying Wampanoag".. According to family records she was known as Alice Sessatom.

(The family did not actually meet up for a long time afterwards.)

8. The 'First Encounter'

http://www.8thfire.net/Day_0.html

"In the pivotal year of 1620, this place is where the band of human beings who came to be known as the Pilgrims had their initial contact with the Native people. First contact was here -- not at Plymouth, Massachusetts as is widely thought. On these sands a group of native men from the Nauset band engaged a group of strangers that they saw as thieves, grave robbers, and possibly slave traders."

9. Before watching that show, I have no idea that native Americans were sold
into slavery to the West Indies and Europe.

14. And another!
4-13: After the Mayflower
4-20: Tecumseh's Vision
4-27: Trail of Tears
5-4 : Geronimo
5-11: Wounded Knee

I would think all five are worth watching. The last one is about the 71-day occupation in 1973.

Nominated.

17. the U.S. government's treatment of Native Americans is quite possibly . . .
the lowest moral abyss to which this nation has ever sunk . . . instead of learning from them how to live off the abundant resources the new land offered while respecting the earth, water, air, and wildlife, the European invaders instead stole the land from those who had settled it and sought to eliminate the "savages," often in horrific ways (e.g. smallpox infested blankets, free liquor, confinement to reservations, etc.) . . .

despite the cruelties inflicted, this nation could still learn much from its original inhabitors -- if only we would listen . . .
