Texas novelist 'Bud' Shrake dies in Austin

AUSTIN -- Fort Worth native and Texas novelist Edwin "Bud" Shrake, 77, died early Friday in Austin.

Shrake had been suffering from lung cancer after years of treatment for prostate cancer. He died at St. David's Hospital.

He was a sports writer who came out of Paschal High School to work at Fort Worth and Dallas newspapers before going on to Sports Illustrated.

He wrote novels including Blessed McGill and Strange Peaches and autobiographies of Willie Nelson and football coach Barry Switzer.

But his most popular was Harvey Penick's Little Red Book, a golf guide that became the best-selling sports book in publishing history.

1. Passing of a really good man.
Shrake was a contemporary of Dan Jenkins and worked with Blackie Sherrod. A writer I will miss.
