How can Pakistan fall to the Taliban
Edited on Mon May-18-09 11:31 PM by Juche
In the elections of 2008 the moderate parties won about 90% of the vote, the radicalized, islamist parties won something like 5%.

If the Taliban only has the support of 5% of the electorate, how could they overthrow the country? Wouldn't the public resist?

1. Brute force? That's what the Taliban does. That's why they're a
big problem. It's based on religion, afaik, so there's no chatting with them.

2. It would be very difficult

The Big "Con" - Holbrooke, Taliban, an Another 9/11

Plus check this out:

Cole continued;

We have a Gallup Poll now, 60 percent of the Punjabis, who are the majority group in Pakistan, say that it's very negative that there should be Taliban operating in Pakistan. And only ten percent say that it's a positive. So in Pakistan, as a whole, this is a small group. It's not a mainstream, big, mass movement.

4. Two Words; Iran 1979
No one thought this could happen either. They didn't have nukes which is why Pakistan is so much more dangerous to humanity and the fact that the Bush Admin wasted time and resources in Iraq makes their inattention almost criminal!

5. Imagine a destabilization of the situation with India.
one with a limited exchange between India and the more modern areas of Pakistan.
What you have left is the tribal areas.

6. How many Russians were Bolshevicks in 1917
Probably not more than 5 %, but they were the 5 % that were willing to fight.

7. No one "likes" the Taliban, but they have managed to...
take over several districts in spite of that. Maybe they can't take over the entire country, but they don't need the whole country to raise hell in the area.

As Stalin and Hitler discovered-- it's not numbers, it's planning and ruthlessness that win.

8. The Islamic fundamentalists were also a minority in Iran
and sometimes a well organized, noisy minority can take the country over.

Did the US public resist the GOP coup in 2000?
