Dear Jon: my response to the DCCC's "urgent renewal notice".
Dear Jon (Vogel), Executive Director, DCCC,

I received your request that I renew my membership by 19June in order to take advantage of the matching funds pledged by the Democratic members of Congress.

In your memo, you discuss Rush Limbaugh, Fox News, right-wing PAC's, and just-say-no republicans as being obstructions to "our" and President Obama's agenda. Nowhere, however, can I find any reference to the Conservative Democrats who consistently vote with the just-say-no Republicans. Nor do I see any discussion of those Democrats who are so firmly entrenched with large corporations that they no longer give the people like me a seat at the table. Seems to me you need to get your own house in order before you criticize others.

While I do not expect to get everything I want, I DO expect to be afforded an opportunity to have my views represented. I am, of course, referring to Health Insurance Reform, and the issue of a single-payer option. As a retired RN, it's very disheartening to see my colleagues arrested on order of the Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, Sen. Max Baucus. And before you tell me they were guilty of disrupting a hearing, let me remind you that if they had been given a seat at the table, there would have been no need for the disruptions in the first place.

As for my contribution. I'm afraid you're just going to have to get by without it. What little I have left after the Wall Street Bailout is going to help my family, friends, and neighbors.

In case you hadn't noticed, many people are struggling just to keep food on the table and a roof over their heads, not to mention trying to cope with devastating medical bills because they are either uninsured or under insured. Case in point would be my adult niece. After surviving a horribly abusive marriage, she was diagnosed with lymphoma three days after losing her job to downsizing. Needless to say, my money is going to help pay for her medical bills. Anything left will go to a friend who also lost his job due to downsizing. He has a wife and two small children to support and no job prospects.

In closing, let me just make a suggestion: perhaps you could get some assistance from Wall Street and/or the banks we, as taxpayers, have so generously propped up. Surely you know someone on the inside who could petition them on your behalf. Geithner and Summers come to mind. As for me, I'm all tapped out right now, but please feel free to contact me again after you pass Single-Payer reform.

Sincerely----

Where were the handcuffs for Bush, Cheney, Rice, Rumsfeld, Rove?

5. Thanks!
At the rate Bacus was having them arrested, there'd be no need for any type of health insurance 'cause there wouldn't be anyone there to care for the sick!

My fondest wish is to live long enough to see these war criminals frog marched before the Hague. Where's extrordinary rendition when you need it?

3. I put pleas for money from pols right up there with emails from Nigeria.
"The government of my country snubs honest simplicity, but fondles artistic villainy, and I think I might have developed into a very capable pickpocket if I had remained in the public service a year or two."

"Right here in this heart and home and fountain-head of law this great factory where are forged those rules that create good order and compel virtue and honesty in the other communities of the land, rascality achieves its highest perfection."

"It could probably be shown by facts and figures that there is no distinctly native American criminal class except Congress."

7. Good for you
I was about to make that suggestion.

I'm a retired RN, too, uninsurable for much of my working life. I lost insurance in 1987 and not only could I not get private insurance, no one would hire me on staff, only as per diem, because my wretched health history might cost them a buck.

To say I am angry is a great understatement.

10. My saving grace in the insurance dept. is that I'm a retired Navy Nurse,
so I have TRICARE. I'm grateful for the coverage, but believe that the taxpayers who pay for my retirement and health care should have the same benefits I do.

9. Great response.
Mine was similar. I told them they needed to rein in the Conservadems who could always be counted on to vote with the Republicans. I also mentioned the Baucus hearing escapade and how insulted I was at the disdain for the protestors.

Maybe if they get a couple hundred thousand responses like this, they'll get the idea.

Sending good thoughts to your neice for a speedy and full recovery, and best of luck to your friend in his search for a job. They're fortunate to have you among their friends.

The friend started mowing my lawn when he was a skinny 13yr old! He's 20 now. He refers to me as his "grandma". lol. He used to bring the neighborhood kids around, show them my house, and tell them that "my grandma lives there. You leave her alone, or you'll be sorry"! I love that kid!

I've sent em enough nasty replies about their failure ( over and over) to stand up to the repubes on damn near everything, this being only the latest issue. And "failure to stand up to em" is really not even strong enough. Its being beholden to the same money the repubes are and not giving a rat's ass about the rest of us.

30. I sent a similar response to them.
They're an incumbent protection racket. And down here in Florida, they won't give a progressive the time of day, but they'll recruit repukes like Tim Mahoney, and Christine Jennings to run as Dems. They've already found another one in the 5th District for next year.

I told them that anything I had left was going to Kucinich.

37. I told them that although I`d been a rabid Democrat
for over four decades, they should remove my name from any lists they have kicking around. Why? I`m poor, just about everyone I know is poor, so any extra money I get from now on is going in a local can or jar set up to help folks really in need....like the young, paralyzed Vermont soldier who is trying to get home. http://www.helpbringandrewhome.org/

I suggested that the big honchos contact some of the multi-millionaires at AIG or if that fails, someone could hold a bake sale or raffle off a used Escalade.

Surely you are not the only disaffected Democrat pulling support from the party. Who does that leave to replace you? Conservadems and Corporations. Every dollar a corporation gives is another vote they get in policymaking. Of course, our dollars never buy us anything.

Opting out accomplishes nothing. Donating accomplishes nothing. We are powerless.

42. To everyone who has responded to this thread, I thank you.
I had just found out about my niece's diagnosis when the plea for money arrived in the mail. Needless to say, the stars were misaligned for the DCCC that day!

My problem is not that the causes that are important to me are not being addressed as fast as I'd like. It's that I feel I, and many others like me, have no representation. This was made painfully clear regarding the issue of Health Insurance Reform, and was where I decided to draw my own personal line in the sand.

I am no longer willing to settle for the lesser of the two evils, as the Dems and Republicans are,IMO, just opposite sides of the same coin. We would have to be living on another planet to think that our government isn't corrupt, or that the voters actually have a chance against the money the corporations, banks, and Wall Street throw at our elected representatives.

If I were younger and in better health, I'd be marching, but signing petitions, making phones calls, writing letters, and withholding financial support are the only weapons I have, but I intend to use them to the best of my ability.

Again, thanks to all of you for your kind words and encouragement. Keep up the good work, DU!:grouphug: :fistbump:

I put in nearly $1000 cash to candidates this past election plus lots of manpower. A lot of us devoted money, precious time and energy. Enough.

I think there is the potential for a surprise mid-term 2010 as people start realizing it may be safe to vote republican again. Great leaders know how to build and win public support for their mandate by appealing directly to the public to gain support and momentum for legislative priorities.

Obama is great at abstract speeches, but he's talking to himself. He needs to stop covering the big hairy asses: CIA and Treasury and Wall Street and Health Care and on and on. CIA and Wall Street should have their budgets slashed and executives removed and major legislative reform passed to keep these powers in check.
