Home-Cooked Pet Food Not Always Safe
Source: Post Chronicle

The Canadian Veterinary Medical Association says pet owners need to be aware of the risks of serving home-cooked foods to their pets.

Recent deaths from tainted pet food has increased the appeal of home-cooking for some pet owners, but the CVMA says people need to do some research first, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported.

One of the biggest concerns is a risk of salmonella poisoning associated with raw pet food diets.

1. "serving home-cooked foods" .... "raw pet food diets"
A little contradictory, IMO.

3. I remember reading that dogs have such strong stomach acid
(in the wild, they're scavengers and eat stuff that a lot more disgusting than raw chicken) that they can eat things that would make a human sick. They're even immune to botulism, although a friend in Oregon had a dog who died of "salmon poisoning" from eating a dead salmon it found on a riverbank.

In the old days, people fed their dogs on table scraps. Meals were usually meat, potatoes, and a vegetable, so that's what the dog got, too.

4. We feed our dogs raw, never cooked, and salmonella has never been a problem.

No problems whatsoever, actually. Fewer vet bills, cleaner coats, clean teeth, impressed veterinarians...

BTW, cooked bones are never a good idea, as they're prone to splintering, whereas raw bones are not.

6. The pet food lobby has kicked it into high gear
Other than pepper, chocolate and "gassy" vegetables, I am unaware of few things my dogs won't eat and do well on.

On the other hand, that greasy, grainy, smelly brown crunchy crap scares the bejeebus out of me.

9. I don't get it, if you apply common food safety rules, what is the problem?
Home-cooked and raw don't seem to relate to each other, what am I missing?
