2. Letterman responded to Palin's website trashing him |
|
Todd posted that Letterman was condoning the rape of his daughter...really far out stuff..and Palin wasn't much better. So he responded by telling the jokes OVER again.. (didn't she learn anything from McCain gaffe?) and had much sympathy from audience..and Kathy Griffin came on trashing Palin and Todd. It was fab :-)

7. I thought Letterman's "slutty" joke was off the mark, kinda dumb. |
|
Palin, especially with all her winks and folksiness in the vice presidential debate, appeared to me not slutty, but a dorky flirt. Which is plenty funny.
But I think there's a larger point here. Letterman's a comedian, and in my view comedic speech ought not be held to the same standards of "responsibility" and "respectability" that we expect of news reporters or politicians. Comedians ought to be able to push the boundaries: sometimes they hit; sometimes they miss. What I'm saying is, Letterman made a crappy joke, but because he does comedy, it's silly to make it an issue of outrage or protest.
Keep in mind, in 2016 our great Secretary of State Hillary Clinton may well face off against Sarah Palin for president, and Hillary, who has a great earthy sense of humor, would no doubt make some rough jokes about Sarah Palin, too.

11. In Letterman's defense, I'll bet money he had nothing to do with the joke other than to |
|
read it off of his teleprompter. He's not that funny, and not that original. A network writer blurted it out during yesterday's spitball session, and all the juvenile wannabe comics in the room guffawed. Without network writers, Letterman would have been an afterthought LONG before he got the Late Night gig.
In response to your last paragraph, IF Palin looks like she'll run in 2012, AND her numbers look favorable, AND it seems like she might be the Rethug nominee, look for SoS HC to abandon her post to challenge Obama for the Dem nomination. NO way will Hillary let Palin contend for the title of "First Female President" without challenging her. That's just a gut feeling.

18. I don't think they were sexist at all |
|
All based on reality
Palin's daughter does have a track record of getting knocked up
Elliot Spitzer has a track record of sleeping with prostitutes
Palin has a habit of titillating audiences for votes. That may not be slutty, but its disingenuous to say the least.

4. she might have been able to get some sympathy if they outrage wasn't so phony |
|
trying to claim he was attacking the 14 year old is such bs. it's clear he was speaking about Bristol who is a public figure now with the stupid abstinence campaign.
i'm glad Letterman didn't back down from yesterday . i saw he had some apology but on Olbermann's show it seemed more an explanation that the joke was not aimed at the 14 year old as Palin claimed.
and Todd IS a Tool.

they shouldn't be talking.
they used him to further her political ambitions during the convention then trashed him afterwards.

20. Letterman should just invoke the Limbaugh Rule |
|
Whenever he's cornered about making yet another fatuous, offensive comment, Rush turtles and yammers about how he's just an entertainer, and it was just a joke, and can't you take a little humor, and you're just so thin-skinned, and quit being unfair, you libruls!
Letterman's just an entertainer. Absolved.
