Oregon woman obsessed with rabbits arrested again
PORTLAND — Washington County's "Bunny Lady" is back in the hutch after violating a court order not to own or control animals for five years. Miriam Sakewitz, 47, was arrested again Tuesday at a Tigard hotel after an employee reported finding rabbits hopping around in her room.

Problems for Sakewitz started in October 2006 when Hillsboro police found and confiscated nearly 250 rabbits in her home, including about 100 dead ones in freezers and refrigerators.

Police said she broke into the facility where the survivors were being cared for in January 2007 and stole most of them back. Authorities found her a few days later in Chehalis, Wash., with eight live rabbits and two dead ones in her car. Another 130 were recovered at a nearby horse farm.

She was placed on five years probation, banned from owning or controlling animals and was told not to go within 100 yards of a rabbit.

Tigard Police spokesman Jim Wolf said Washington County animal control officers removed eight adult rabbits, five young ones and a dead one from her hotel room Tuesday.

11. I think the term is "hoarding syndrome" or something like that. It affects a lot of...
...people. You can usually tell the difference between a collector and a hoarder. From what I've read, it doesn't always make sense what a person hoards. In this case, it's rabbits. In many cases, believe it or not, it's trash.

I have no idea if this was coincidence or what but I've actually been around several trash hoarders. One of them I'll never forget- the house was so bad my mother wouldn't let me go inside. It stank so bad (there was dog feces on the floor) I can't actually explain the type of stench coming out of that place. You could smell it from the street. Now that I think about it, if you sprayed "Raid" bug spray into a plastic bag filled with shit and then covered your mouth and nose with the bag and inhaled- that's a pretty good approximation of what it'd smell like.

Now the weird part. Not only were the people not poor, both of them had very nice-paying jobs and (this in back in the 70's and very early 80's) made almost $100,000 a year, combined incomes. I think they both had to be stricken with it. Anyway, so their house was pretty nice with the patio and pool and everything. Had a huge boat in their carport (large driveway with a roof but no walls) and another, smaller boat like for going out on a lake or something.

And inside this house it was freaking wall-to-wall trash. Sorry to drone on, the memories of peeking through the glass screen door and seeing it all are pretty overwhelming.

12. It's really strange.
According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Animal_hoarding it's a manifestation of OCD. I've also read it's 80% women who do this, and most are over 60.

"Compulsive hoarding can be characterized as a symptom of obsessive–compulsive disorder rather than deliberate cruelty towards animals. Hoarders are deeply attached to their pets, and find it extremely difficult to let the pets go. They typically cannot comprehend that they are harming their pets by failing to provide them with proper care. Hoarders tend to believe that they provide the right amount of care for their pets."

4. This woman needs help
You don't even have to pay very close attention to the news to see another story about this woman. "Obsessed" barely scratches the surface for Ms. Sakewitz' disorder. She's gone way around the bend, and probably the only thing that keeps her out of jail (where she probably doesn't belong) is a very calm demeanor. But she's completely mental on the subject of rabbits and should probably be committed to an institution somewhere until she can get a handle on this compulsion she has.

5. Maybe Hugh Hefner could let her live with him at the mansion
an altruistic gesture on his part might be the best therapy for her.
