On Dupes
Or - on posting duplicate threads on a popular news issue of the day (or week perhaps)

I can't read DU at work. And right now I am insanely busy at work, and often have work to do when I get home (I could stay at work and do it, but they don't have a beer vending machine there. What's the point of staying I ask?)

Often, people like me and many others here have a limited time to be online. When I get home, especially the last few weeks, my daughter comes over. So we play our games and watch shows we like.

Others are equally busy for different reasons.

Sometimes they see something on the news, have a window of time to post/read, and post an article that some will comment 'has been posted 4 times already in the last 48 hours'.

Ok - it is NOT hard to do a search, but sometimes those results are a little whack (different article titles, etc).

And even when you do a search and see something similar, you don't know unless you click on it which forum/etc it was posted in.

It also REAL easy to, especially if you are someone on here a lot, to see that a new thread on the same topic you have already posted on has been posted (by how many views, replies, etc) and one can easily click 'Hide Thread'. Two clicks, no searching, done.

And posting to such a thread only kicks it.....which puts it right back up there for you to see again. Makes sense

Ever watch the news on TV? They don't just mention a story once on one show and move on. The same channel has different commentators starting off their whole new show on the same news story.

----For the site Admins: I do a lot of data base work and understand the problems dupes present with space and such. Perhaps a simple feature would help this: When someone clicks Post (for a new topic) it checks the title and shows similar topics within last 24 hours (similar to google's search by time) and asks if you are sure you want to post this.

rant off :)

2. TIP: Sort the forum page by "start time", not the default, by "last reply".
That's what I do before posting.

The default view only shows the 80 threads most recently replied to (that might just be 20 or 30 minutes worth in GD).

The start time view shows the 80 most recent posts from most recent back, (currently GD shows 3 hours worth).

So, before I post I check a page or two in "start time" view and if I don't see it there or in the default view, I figure it's time to post it.

I've never DU googled to check for dupes, but I do look in LBN, GD, and GDP as appropriate.

Thanks!
