4 Years Ago Today, Andy Stephenson, died.
Edited on Tue Jul-07-09 11:04 AM by goodboy
Please kick and recommend. Let's never forget Andy, and the work he did to preserve our democracy and keep our elections free and fair for all Americans.

Voting-rights activist Andy Stephenson was so full of life it seems impossible that he is dead. Surrounded by his life partner, Ted Edmondson, and members of his family, Stephenson passed away on Thursday, July 7, at Seattle's Virginia Mason Medical Center. The Seattle resident was 43.

12. Wow-- 4 years already- amazing how fast the time has flown by.
Sending love to you Andy- I know you are smiling at us from wherever you are and you know we are beaming right back at you. Ted- not sure if you're still popping in here on occasion- sending a hug to you too (and to Ballot).

Somewhere I have some great photos Andy taken when we were all together in Nashville- what a fantastic conference that was. We had a blast running around Nashville doing touristy things! Plus, so many of us who had become online friends, got to meet each other in person- we had really become quite a powerful community of election reform activists. Geeez has it really been 4 years??

Here's a memory that will be with me forever... I had surgery the same week Andy had his surgery at John's Hopkins. I remember speaking to him just before he went in and a few days later, when I was just back from the recovery room, my cell phone rang in the hospital and it was him. I remember asking him how in the world he was able to be well enough to call me so soon after his surgery. He answered that he was doing ok but that he just wanted to make sure I was ok after mine. I was so shocked- his was the last voice I expected to hear so soon! He really was an inspiration to us all and someone I will never forget.

Anyway, cheers to Andy and to everyone he inspired to never stop working on saving democracy!

157. Ah yes- those great photos-- we did have a blast goofing around in Nashville--
I will never forget how much fun we had driving around together in between the amazing gatherings at the church. So much happened in that short time-- think about how many of us just showed up- from all over the country- it was just amazing. Clint was there, Brad was there wearing his "man on the street" hat- doing interviews with people downtown asking them if they thought the election had been legitimate (and other great questions), David Cobb was there, Cynthia McKinney- and you guys of course.

25. I only interacted with him once, sort-of...
...when I replied to his thread in which he wondered about what do you suppose happens after you die.

But it was clear that he was much-loved and respected by many, and I was sad to hear of his death - and angry over the extenuating circumstances.

Hope he's well aware now, in some way, that his political efforts were not in vain!

85. he was attacked by a very jealous person whose name will not be said

In Memory of Andy Stephenson

1962-2005
A good man, a tireless activist, and for too short a time, a friend.

Mostly a very very jealous person who could have been great except for a baseness,
a selfishness, a viciousness that led her to attack Andy and even publicly claim
Andy was faking illness.

This evilness resulted in the medical paypal account being frozen, which meant
Andy's surgery was delayed about 2 weeks. That was precious time he couldn't afford to lose,
and he lost his life because of it.

It was sad to see a supposed e-voting activist turn on her own and help drum
up hatred against someone so dear.

Andy had a trip planned to North Carolina but got very sick a few months before it could happen.
He would answer his phone, talk to people, share information, and teach.

I never had the honor to meet him in person, but those conversations by phone and email, and PM
meant alot.

He encouraged us to all continue, and he would be proud of how much we have achieved so far.

The E-voting movement is a very powerful one. In part, thanks to Andy's contributions.

Hey man,

You don't know me, I just clicked on the thread you titled to nay-sayers. Thought it was going to be something else. As soon as I realized what the images were I backed out (just cause I don't need to see em and really feel for your privacy in this matter).

I just really feel bad that you have been put on the spot like that where you feel that you should do that when you should just be focused on things at hand.

But yeah, I never doubted you. Really hope that you beat that tumor and get better ok. Try not to let trolls get to ya, you have alot more folks out there pulling for you.

32. Yes, he was one outstanding DUer and American patriot.
He could have still been with us if this country covered it's citizens with access to timely health care. With the best health care available here for a price, he couldn't get life sustaining surgery in time to save him because he had lost his insurance through a series of events in his life that left him uncovered.

46. Andy crashed on my couch during the 2004 Republican convention
One night we decided to check out a Young Republicans party at a pool hall a few blocks away. The Young Republicans weren't very young, of course, they looked like bankers as they smoked outside the event, but Andy proceeded to make friends. He started handing out flyers about Voter Verified Paper Ballots and Black Box Voting. He attempted to pursuede the Republicans that this was their issue too, patiently explaining to them the dangers of electronic voting machines. He convinved a few of them, I think. He made friends everywhere he went, even at the RNC. (I remember him whipping out his beloved laptop to demonstrate to a waitress at the Stonewall how easy it was too manipulate votes on Diebold software). I miss him. xxS

In those last weeks when everything heated up, Andy called me 10 times a day and my husband grew jealous. I even called Gore to hit him up during the fundraiser and that was how much I loved Andy and how listening to him could be a dangerous activity.

lol

Our best, dear Andy.

Cheers, Stephanie.

I contributed to his surgery fund and was surprised and delighted to receive a note and photograph in return.

As Cleita said, his story cries out for the need for universal health care as well as for verifiable voting. It's all connected.

76. I don't know if I've ever said this but in those days that we were trying
to put money together for Andy's surgery, and while the thuggery was trying to kill our effort, DU was astonishing.

I was the money person and the hospital didn't even give me time to set up a checking account because they'd have put a hold on our checks and we didn't have that kind of time. And you all stepped up anyway. What DU did has to be the most beautiful thing I've ever seen any group of people do, or what I'll ever see.

And Andy felt that. He had you all under his sails and knowing that made the rest of his battle a little easier.

You all can be so very proud of that. I know I'm more proud of us than I can ever say.

Beautiful, contentious, stubborn as hell and more loyal than Mom DU.

Thank you so much for letting me witness that.

82. You are so correct- it was an absolutely intense and unbelievable time-
What we accomplished in a very short time raising enough money to get him into that hospital was nothing short of a miracle. Everyone just came together- it was absolutely astounding. Step by step- strangers just giving whatever they could- doing whatever they could manage-- from all different locations. It is true, DU- it was a miraculous effort- and he did know that - I know this for a fact - I read him some of the posts when he was in the hospital and some times, late at night, as did many others in this community- our community- because that's what it is. And it blew him away and filled him with the love and helped him stay focused and helped him keep his humor in spite of the immense battle he was facing. I too will never forget that experience- it was extraordinary. Wherever Andy is at this moment, he too will never forget and you can bet that he is feeling our love right now- and beaming it right back down on us.

91. Intense is the word. I barely knew what PayPal was
or the Amazon thing and during those eleven days also got a bunch of checks and even cash in the mail from people who didn't know me from Adam.

From all over the country. From other countries. From everywhere.

But the very best part is, Andy was still well enough to know that and to take it in and to know how loved he was.

And DU made that part happen, every bit of it. :grouphug:

110. Amen to that- and yes, DU--please know this- it was extraordinary
and truly inspiring. I'm a bit teary at the moment, but I did have to chuckle about your Paypal comments- we were all sort of new to all of this and just starting to grasp the enormity of what could be accomplished with through viral marketing. And we were all strangers to each other - brought together by this collective clarity about how our democracy had been hijacked and Andy was leading the fight, lighting the path with a flashlight (and that wonderful, huge, very contagious grin!).

To see there were people like Andy actively engaged in figuring out how to fight back against the authoritarian wingnuts who'd been put in charge of the country - it was amazing and heartening. At the height of the Gannon scandal and his dozens of unexplained visits to the Bush White House, remember that he posted a story which suggested that some DC real estate companies were using their unoccupied properties for trysts between politicians and prostitutes? Maybe Fornigate isn't limited to hotels, and maybe it's not limited to FEMALE hookers...FOUND ANDY STEPHENSON'S THREAD!

about the Stephenson affair -- PayPal and Bev and the Freepers and the hospital and everything, especially the Freepers!

I checked the Research Forum and there's nothing on Andy. His Wikipedia entry is down.

The facts are scattered all over the place. Can anybody offer the best link to the facts and place it in the research forum? Would love to see what happened to the Freepers who succeeded in delaying Andy's treatment.

Incidentally, I met him at Nashville election reform meeting. Good guy.

147. K&R for Andy!
Has it really been 4 years already? I was probably only a member here for about 8 months before Andy died - he was one of the best - a truly good guy. I miss seeing him around. Thanks for all you did Andy!

153. Andy, we tried. But it's complicated!
Glad you were there during some of the dark days, but the more things change, the more they stay the same. I'm thinking you kept them from getting a hell of a lot worse though!

R.I.P.

159. I didn't save it
but one of my favorites was the drag photo with him and Termite.

It's a measure of his life how many of us still miss him, those of us who knew him only by his words and an occasional photo--some suitable for blackmail.

One thing I'm certain of, he did his work with us well and completed it before he left us, even though he didn't live long enough to know it.

I still miss him.

161. A last kick, before this thread drops off the record and into history
Andy would have liked Obama - but of course not without keeping up the fight for the civil rights and democracy!

He would have been a fun guy to have around here today, resourceful and with the right spirit.

Thanks for posting this :)

164. One more kick, because our elections are still not safe and Andy deserves more.

Story I wrote during the Spring of 2005 here.
http://www.votepa.us/newsarchive/andystory.html

Remember that just because Obama won, it does NOT prove that the election problems have been corrected. All it proves it that the Democrats could win a landslide against one of the most unpopular administrations in history.

When things get closer, when the races tighten up again, the problems will still be there and sooner or later will come back to bite this country hard.

Please work for the election integrity organization of your choice in Andy's memory.

166. RIP Andy Stephenson
May you recognize in your life the presence,
Power and light of your soul.

May you realize that you are never alone,
That your soul in its brightness and belonging
Connects you intimately with the rhythm of the universe.

May you have respect for your individuality and difference.

May you realize that the shape of your soul is unique,
That you have a special destiny here,
That behind the façade of your life
There is something beautiful and eternal happening.

May you learn to see your self
With the same delight,
Pride and expectation
With which God sees you in every moment.

- John O'Donohue
