Other than staying home in 10 and 12
please tell me what else we can do to affect policy? Electing Obama, 60 Senators and a huge House majoorty ain't done it. What else do you suggest? More of the same? Hey, I am 61 and not willing to wait. Yeah I am stupid, and disloyal for even SUGGESTING that the Dems seem to be sucking, and that there seem no other options to get what we - and most americans - want.

1. You act as if all Dems are the same.
Surely you've become aware by now that that is not the case.

Good luck with your fit throwing. Maybe it will pay off for you in some way.

If you're serious about changing policy... I thought it was obvious... change Congress. See the link in my sig.

6. Actually the topics were diametric opposites..
What will happen if we stay home?

What are the alternatives to staying home?

Me, I think the alternative is to outbid the corporations with donations to politicians..

Since that isn't going to happen I'm not sure there *are* any alternatives.

4. You just got the 60th Senator this afternoon.
You want the change right now? You can't be patient?

Other wise, put pressure on the Dems who actually have power. Or just whine about how slowly things change to people on DU, who know that already but who have more patience than you.

18. I just saw one those GD anti-health care ads.
:grr: Basically saying that government funded health care would cost taxpayers $1 trillion and would cause taxes to be raised and CALL CONGRESS RIGHT NOW to oppose government funded health care.

Call Congress and tell them that YOU DON'T want what THEY have. :silly:

8. I suggest you bide your time and wait until someone like Bush gets elected again...
...at which time you'll be on DU pissing and moaning every day about how dumb the country is for electing him/her.

How does that sound? It worked in 2000, didn't it?

14. Patience.
I realize that this response will piss you off to no end, but it's true. Rome was neither built nor burnt in a single day, and the wheels of policy and true progressive change in Washington tend to move slower than anyone is comfortable with. If you want Washington to do anything, you must mount consistent, long-term and strong pressure on elected officials. You back the more progressive candidate during primary elections, and either unseat the incumbent, or threaten them enough that they become more pliant to your particular issue. It took us 30 years of bad, inept and corrupt government to get here, it will take more than 6 months to fix it.

24. How long did it take Congress to decide to bail out the banksters?
Why does it take decades to move in a progressive direction and mere days to decide to bail out banksters to the tune of hundreds of billions of dollars?

16. Call your Senator's office & the offices of the other Dems who are
objecting to what you want. It sure looks like at least some are changing their minds after being inundated with calls. Just this AM Schumer said any bill on HC WILL contain a public plan.

17. And don't stop calling and writing.
Big Money is constantly whispering into our representatives' ears, reminding them how much easier it is to work for Big Money.

We have to speak louder than the money, or one day only money will speak.

20. I think a good start is understanding and internalizing that we are at the begininng
not the end.

Perhaps the opposition's greatest weapon is our short attention span. They've been focused on goals for generations, if not hundreds or even thousands of years. Meanwhile, the majority of the people's will can evaporate for a million different reasons over short months or years.

More liberals need to learn the meaning of relentlessness. I think many, if not most, substitute never giving up with a relatively short burst of angst filled intensity and more or less quit on the whole idea of making a difference.

Face the length of the road before you and then plant your course steadfastly towards your destination. Twists, turns, and potholes are part of any trip on any road and turning around or pulling over are not short cuts.

23. Run for office or post hit & run flame bait on an anonymous internet forum
Either of those will do something, but the first is the better thing to do if you actually want to change something.
