Hillary Clinton Proposes Dialogue and Mediation to Restore Democracy in Honduras: Zelaya not Happy
Edited on Tue Jul-07-09 03:59 PM by SuperTrouper
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has proposed a very reasonable option to solve the Honduran situation. She has asked President Arias of Costa Rica, a Nobel Peace laureate, to mediate a peaceful solution and does not want Zelaya to stampede himself into Honduras against "an implacable de facto government". Zelaya agreed but in separate interviews with Centroamerica TV he was not happy and seemed resentful that the US did not throw its weight around to oust Micheletti immediately. Zelaya is now traveling to Costa Rica to await the dialogue. President Micheletti has agreed to let President Arias mediate and is now meeting with the Presidential candidates in Honduras, Porfirio Lobo (National Party) and Elvin Santos (Liberal Party) to hold elections in the very near future instead of November 29th, 2009. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has done a great job in helping defuse the situation and hopefully in the next few days we see a resolution without the intervention of the South American countries; Arias said today that it is better if Central Americans solve this situation themselves. Secretary Clinton has been masterful in keeping the USA away from getting directly involved and not shutting off Honduras completely.

4. B.S.! U.S. recognizes only the government led by President Zelaya.
That is the only president. Micheletti, who you refer to as "president," was never known or addressed as such by Clinton or anyone else in the U.S. government. U.S. is only allowing a face saving by the coup plotters to slink back in their holes.

7. The US says that Zelaya is President but the Obama Administration
will not get directly involved in this...they are recommending mediation to solve the situation.

14. Mediation to restore the constitutional order.
Not "mediation" for its own sake or in some ill-defined way. The stated objective is to restore President Zelaya to his office. I do think it would be fair to offer some form of immunity or leniency to those who executed the coup. Negotiations could be aimed at such provisions as a sign of humanitarian concern.

6. Prediction: he gets to return, faces 18 charges so will be arrested for trial, elections will come
early. That will be the Costa Rican Solution™ IMO.

8. I think that they will drop the charges provided he is reinstated as the puppet President
of the Congress and Supreme Court. Micheletti will go back to Congress and elections occur in 1-2 months.

10. I don't understand why they would reinstate and drop charges as well?
