Michael Fucking Jackson's deathapalooza has lasted twice as long as Ronald Fucking Reagan's
And Reagan's was 5 days longer than necessary. THAT is why I'm sick of it.

Funeral in a fucking stadium. Non stop TV coverage? This shit is ridiculous.

At least Michael Jackson could afford to buy the pharmaceuticals that killed him. Now why don't we get this bullshit off the TV and demand the media whores talk about REAL Health Care Reform.

She's so good at stealing the spotlight that she actually interrupted Michael Jackson's Deathapalooza!

That's fucking impressive.

Actually it was well timed. There would be just enough time for the "WTF is Palin doing this week" Without the embarassing, complex, and damning questions about what scandal she was trying to avoid when she quit.

Edited on Tue Jul-07-09 04:24 PM by mamaleah
Many other very valuable members of society give way more than a celebrity. teachers, mentors...they give so much hope and time. They touch a lot of people too, and fail to get a full funeralpalooza.

It's our celebrity crazed culture that demands we hold a celebrity at the same level of esteem, or higher, than other extremely important members of society.

I'm just saying when a dead President gets a week of coverage - and that was condemned as over the top at the time, how does a pop singer rate nearly two weeks.

Yeah, the guy sold millions of records. Yeah he made history. Fine. But two fucking weeks of non stop death coverage??

The only person in history who deserved that much mourning would have ruined the whole thing by rising from the dead on the third day. Good thing the Romans didn't invent cable news!

In contrast, Jackson brought a little beauty into people's lives.

27. Seems about right to me.
Michael Jackson had a lot more talent. He was most certainly "A" list.

Reagan was some cheap character actor his entire life. He wasn't quite sure what kind of T.V. President he was playing toward the end, but the gig lasted eight years, which is pretty good work in Hollywood, even if some crazy stalker fan shoots you. Publicity is publicity, it made all the tabloids! Nancy's astrologer said it would be a bad day, but what the hell, the nurses were cute and everyone treated him like a king.

We still have the "unofficial biographies," memorial videos and made-for-tv movies yet to go. That's after the re-cap of the summary of the aftermath of the funeral on all the M$M channels.

Once that's over, things will settle down and Neverland will become an ordinary billion-dollar theme park.

55. Nationalize The New Channels!
We all know, really, why there is such wall-to-wall coverage of Michael Jackson's death and funeral and investigation into his death and retrospectives on Michael Jackson, etc., etc.

It's because IT SELLS.

All of those networks covering Michael Jackson and the funeral are for-profit BUSINESSES.

They MUST make a PROFIT.

And, in order to do that, they will ALWAYS ALWAYS look to put things on the air that will SELL ADVERTIZING.

This whole thing could end if we had the courage to NATIONALIZE our news channels -- CNN, MSNBC, HLN, FOX -- every one of them.

THEN -- AND ONLY THEN -- we could have serious discussions about things lilke health care, climate change, and others.

Until then, it will be "news" that SELLS.

60. As I said in another thread on this subject, I watched the BBC world news on my local PBS station
They mentioned Michael Jackson's funeral only in the last 30 seconds. I also saw the very beginning of Jim Lehrer's report. He didn't go directly to the Deathaplooza either. Didn't think to check CBC, but I'm guessing they didn't go off the deep end either (now if it had been a hockey player, who knows....)

Point is, there is a very obvious difference in how the public broadcasting outlets covered this, compared to the corporate whores.

From WIKI:

In 2000, Jackson was listed in the book of Guinness World Records for his support of 39 charities, more than any other entertainer or personality.<115> At the time, Jackson was waiting for the licenses to the masters of his albums to revert to him; this allowed him to promote his old material how he liked and prevented Sony from getting a cut of the profit. Jackson expected this to occur early in the new millennium, however, due to the fine print and various clauses in the contract, this revert date is still many years away. Jackson began an investigation, and it emerged that the attorney who represented the singer in the deal was also representing Sony, creating a conflict of interest.<112> Jackson was also concerned about another conflict of interest. For a number of years, Sony had been pushing to buy all of Jackson's share in their music catalog venture. If Jackson's career or financial situation were to deteriorate, he would have to sell his catalog. Thus, Sony had something to gain from Jackson's career failing.<116> Jackson was able to use these conflicts as leverage to exit his contract early.<112> Just before the release of Invincible (on October 30, 2001) , Jackson informed the head of Sony Music Entertainment, Tommy Mottola, that he was leaving Sony.<112> As a result, all singles releases, video shootings and promotions concerning the Invincible album were canceled. Jackson made allegations in July 2002 that Mottola was a "devil" and a "racist" who did not support his African-American artists, using them merely for his own personal gain.<112> He charged that Mottola had called his colleague Irv Gotti a "fat nigger".<117> Sony disputed claims that they had failed to promote Invincible with sufficient energy, maintaining that Jackson refused to tour in the US.<118>

Six years after his last studio album and after spending much of the late 1990s out of the public eye, Jackson released Invincible in October 2001 to much anticipation. To help promote the album, a special 30th Anniversary celebration at Madison Square Garden occurred in September 2001 to mark the singer's 30th year as a solo artist. Jackson appeared onstage alongside his brothers for the first time since 1984.<119> The show also featured performances by Mýa, Usher, Whitney Houston, 'N Sync, and Slash, among other artists.<30> In the wake of the September 11, 2001 attacks, Jackson helped organize the United We Stand: What More Can I Give benefit concert at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C. The concert was aired on October 21, 2001, and included performances from dozens of major artists, including Jackson, who performed his song "What More Can I Give" as the finale.<116> Invincible was a commercial success, debuting atop the charts in 13 countries and going on to sell approximately 10 million copies worldwide. It received double-platinum certification in the US.<23><79><116> However, the sales for Invincible were notably low compared to his previous releases, due in part to a diminishing pop music industry, the lack of promotion, no supporting world tour and the label dispute.<116> The album spawned three singles, "You Rock My World", "Cry" and "Butterflies", the latter without a music video.

As to him sleeping with young boys, I've done a bit of research and watched the unedited Bashir interviews where he indicated he slept on the floor, in a sleeping bag vs. in the same bed. The boy in question, confirmed this.

I'm not going to defend him against allegations I have no way of verifying or not, but I will set the record straight on that which I can.

Edited to add Michael Jacksons impact on our culture transcended his music. I don't know how old you are, but most of us 40 somethings can attest to that as, the Rev. Al Sharpton did at the memorial service.

75. Frankly, I'm glad. I don't particularly like Ronald Regan.
Well, I did like him personally, just not as President.

83. I didn't like the bastard either, but that's irrelevant.
It's already been posted up above that JFK got an entire 72 hours coverage from Dallas to the funeral. And he was a good President.

My point about Reagan is that the media whores went completely overboard with his funeral, and gave it a full week of coverage. At the time it was condemned as over the top ridiculousness, and rightly so. Including on this very board.

Yet a pop singer's death gets TWICE the amount of insanity, and everybody's fine with that.

Come to think of it, Tim Russert had as much overexposure as Reagan did, because he was one of their own. And they bestowed far more sainthood on him than he deserved, for that matter. (though he was better than Douchebag Gregory, I'll give him that much)

87. Well you know, hollywood celebrities > former presidents according to the media
I've said it before, it's really sad and shows just how bad our media has become when Jackson's death gets more coverage then the death of former presidents Reagan and Ford combined.

Seriously, when Reagan & Ford died sure they talked about it, but they didn't go on and on and talk about nothing else for 4 days in a row in all the evening news shows.

You'd think that least one news organization would have woken up after the first day and realized "maybe if we cover something other then Jackson we'll get the highest ratings of the night, we can just throw a Jackson story in at the end of the news broadcast that actually talks about anything new in the Jackson story".
