Protesters Furious With Proposed Cuts To California Services

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Caregivers and people with disabilities are furious that Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is asking for more cuts to California's in-home support services.

About 100 protesters said they successfully blocked the entrance to the governor's office Tuesday. The People's Day of Reckoning Coalition organized the protest.

"We are calling for a budget solution that is based upon shared responsibility and shared sacrifice -- not a solution that falls squarely upon on the shoulders of children, people with disabilities, elders, the chronically ill, the unemployed and the impoverished," the letter said.

Schwarzenegger said he wants caregivers and patients to be fingerprinted as a way to prevent fraud and institute unannounced compliance checks at recipients' homes.

"The legislators upstairs, some of them, are very reluctant to do that. They feel that it would be an insult to fingerprint a patient," Schwarzenegger said. "I always tell them that fingerprinting is quite common in a lot of different areas."

Schwarzenegger estimated the state could save as much as $500 million a year by rooting out fraud in the program, but critics of his proposal said it would yield far less than that.

Protesters In Wheelchairs Cited At State Capitol

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ― Anger over the lack of a state budget and proposed cuts is moving some groups to escalate their protests to beyond just waving signs.

Police hauled away protestors in wheelchairs from the State Capitol yesterday after more than a dozen people with disabilities and in wheelchairs physically blocked the entrance to Governor Schwarzenegger's office.

3. "by rooting out fraud in the program"
People would have no reason to fraud ANY program if they could get government healthcare. A single payer public option would eliminate fraud.

6. Make no mistake---The "Fraud" isn't with recipients... it's with "PROVIDERS"!!!
Edited on Wed Jul-08-09 03:07 PM by bobbolink
The way these things get worded, most people are led to believe it's us little folk who are doing the defrauding.

Very rare.

It's doctors, insurance, etc.

NOTICE... how few responses this thread got.

Then "progressives" wonder why poor folki are angry!

5. So I guess double amputees are just SOL
Schwarzenegger said he wants caregivers and patients to be fingerprinted

Fascist. If fraud's that much of a problem, doesn't der Gropenfuhrer have an Inspector General or something?

Reminds me of the time the guy with a disability got thrown out of his public housing unit in Oakland 'cause they caught his personal assitant using drugs. Zero tolerance, y'know... :eyes:

Edited on Wed Jul-08-09 03:16 PM by KamaAina
Typical repuke blame-the-victim crap. Also see all those come-on commercials for mobility scooters. All those hucksters did was make it tougher for people who really need them to get them. :grr: :banghead:

10. Why target us? Two reasons--We're easy to slap down, and we don't have the support.
Edited on Wed Jul-08-09 04:31 PM by bobbolink
You may have noticed... we don't rate when it comes to "progressives".

:grr:

That MAKES us an easy target.

Do you suppose "progressives" will begin caring any time soon?

ps....mahalo for understanding. It's so scary being in the unrecognized minority! :scared:
